Can confirm posts about Atlantic City, Longport and Brigantine, as per police radio. Conditions deteriorated here (5 mi. NE ACY) in past hour. Reports of poles snapped in half in Brigantine. Numerous evacuations that had been underway in northern Atlantic County have now been suspended. Hoping she makes the coast in time to somewhat mitigate the next tide cycle.

I am restructuring the wording in both threads, the live thread should be for meteorological discussion, this thread should be for observations and impacts.

EDIT: They are both "live" threads, but one is focused on meteorological discussion (the previous "live" thread) and this thread will be for some impacts.

E-mail update from Jeff Lindner (HCFCD):

Sandy plowing toward the coast.

NWS Mt Holly, NJ noon briefing:

“Options for it to miss us have run out. This is our worst case scenario. Evening high tide will bring coastal flooding worse than anything we have ever seen. Barrier Islands will be cut-off completely from the mainland. Historic life threatening storm surge is imminent”

Radar Loop:

http://radar.weather...101111&loop=yes

Coastal water level rise in progress, sea water already inundating portions of lower Manhattan and N New Jersey. See images below:

I can't believe what I'm seeing from my home, and so far before high tide. Just awful...

From Jeff L (HCFCD):

Storm surge overwashing the NJ, NY, Long IS, CT, RI, DE coasts. Surge has risen to 9.1ft at Kings Point at the western end of Long Island Sound.

Dunes and seawall protection is being breached on Long Island and along the NJ coast. Flooding is ongoing in/around NYC with sea water overtopping the seawall flooding the FDR and the seawall near Wall Street is being overtopped. Streets are starting to flood in lower Manhattan as the surge is moving into Raritan Bay, Hudson River, and western Long Island Sound. Battery Park is at 9.74ft and rising rapidly!

Officials report widespread deep inundation across much of Atlantic City, NJ as surge is overrunning the coast. Rescue operations on the barrier islands have been suspended until Tuesday.

Damaging winds spreading over a 1000 mile wide area. Numerous trees and power lines already downed with over 1 million now without power.

Clear at this point that ACY and NYC are going to be the hardest hit

Agreed. My overall impression is that the right backside of the cyclone, despite having no convection, is bringing the most serious effects in terms of both damaging winds and also sudden surging along the coast-- and it looks like NYC/W LI is getting the brunt of it.
