Dunkman
If you get back to the thread, had a question about the NC coast as Sandy goes by. KMHX is essentially calling for 30 mph winds with 50 mph gusts...is there a chance things will be substantially worse on the NC coast?

OKpowdah
problem with drawing the elipses with the GFS EnKF is that it's really good for a Gaussian distribution of points, but in this case we're looking at a bifurcation of solutions, so it's pretty much useless. HurricaneJosh
Nice job, guys! I felt pretty embarrassed listening to a radio show that was partially about snow-- nerd city!-- but it was a great discussion and I learned somethin'.

usedtobe
Evacuating Jet, for those who haven't looked at the UL maps. That's a great image. Having the right rear quadrant of an anticyclonically curved jet juxtapose (nearby) the left front of the southern jet stream causes really strong divergence across delmarva. to nj. Makes it pretty easy to see why sandy or frankenwhatever it is ends up in that area on the models. Divergence gets rid of mass (air above the ground which lowers pressure since the surface pressure is dependent on the weight of the air above it.
