I was completely (but pleasantly) surprised by the heavy snow squall this afternoon shortly after 3pm. DTW intra-hour ob had moderate snow with 0.5 mi visib, and it was truly like a blizzard for a few moments. The way the snow was swirling and blowing in 30 mph winds gave it a VERY wintry look. After several traces we are "on-board" for the 2012-13 with 0.1" of snow today. The rest of the day has features snowflakes dancing in the air almost continuously but no additional accumulation.

Took a few pics at work (parking lot = not a scenic background lol).

Was upgraded to a warning last night. Dominant band stayed parked all night. most areas here around western Antrim got 4-6" with some 8" i'm sure in the southwest part of the County (where it's still snowing nicely).

Nothing super signifigant but forecast looks nice:

SUNDAY...SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY. TOTAL DAYTIME SNOW ACCUMULATION

AROUND 1 INCH. HIGHS IN THE MID 30S. WEST WINDS 5 TO 15 MPH WITH

GUSTS TO AROUND 25 MPH. CHANCE OF SNOW 70 PERCENT.

.SUNDAY NIGHT...SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY. ACCUMULATION POSSIBLE. LOWS

IN THE MID 20S. WEST WINDS 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS TO AROUND

30 MPH. CHANCE OF SNOW 70 PERCENT.

.MONDAY...SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY. ACCUMULATION POSSIBLE. HIGHS IN

THE LOWER 30S. WEST WINDS 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS TO AROUND

30 MPH. CHANCE OF SNOW 70 PERCENT.

.MONDAY NIGHT...SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY. ACCUMULATION POSSIBLE. LOWS IN THE MID 20S. CHANCE

OF SNOW 70 PERCENT.

Dry dry dry is the game here..

16F right now... Coldest so far this season. If we had an inch or 2 of snow...temps would have plummeted.

Gotta live in a lake belt, several counties in Michigan got a foot+ last night with this pattern. I heard an area of NE Wisconsin got 11 inches.

It's been quite some time since most of the major climate stations saw an inch of snow. I think DTW and ORD both saw their last inch of snow on Feb 24, or 9 months ago (274 days). Anyone know what the record between last inch and first inch are?

Good question...I don't know the answer, but I imagine they must be getting close to the record, if they haven't set it already.

Could see an inch of snow, maybe even slightly greater, overnight. Will have to take pictures, as I get the feeling it will be at least two weeks until I see another measurable snow. What a gosh awful boring pattern we have been in for seemingly the better part of two years, since the end of the 2010-11 winter.

I don't have the daily snow data, but January 17, 1899 is the record for latest 1.0" or more single snowfall for Chicago (per LOT). March 1898 had 1.0" total for the month, April 1898 0.0". It doesn't look like an inch fell in one system in March 1898, trying to match up daily temps and precip. February 1898 was relatively snowy, so somewhere in that month was probably the last 1.0"+ snowfall that season. So we can probably safely say at least between March 1, 1898 and January 16, 1899 there wasn't a one inch snowfall for Chicago...about 322 days.

Wow... we got pounded by lake effect snow last night. A warning went up sometime around 12am, and then from midnight-4am it was a constant heavy snow with whiteout conditions. No official observations yet, but it was probably in the area of 4-5".

Edit, apparently I was more drunk than I thought. We had about 2-3"

Congrats! It'll take 3 more weeks for me to see a coating. You're a lucky fellow.

Does anyone here also get the impression that we could be headed for a year like 2009-10 where seemingly places that don't usually see a lot of snow and cold get it ( Mid-Atlantic/western Europe/UK) while the places that usually do, and rely on it for the economy, don't?

The latest GFS continues to see warmth to open December. Historically, that has not been a good sign.

Winter seems to be arriving later and later. The last year I can remember an early start to winter was 2008. 2009-10 was a blockbuster in the Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley, as well as western Europe, 2010-11 had a late start ( the further northeast you went, the later it was due to high latitude blocking) and 2011-12 was simply a bust all around.
