That radar image is just amazing! I've been showing it as much as possible this morning. It's crazy they're seeing TS winds on the beaches of Maine (report from a fellow MET who's live out there) and we're seeing winds of 15 mph (expected to be greater this afternoon) and wind chill values in the low to upper 30s this morning! AMAZING STORM from a meteorological standpoint! My thoughts and prayers go out to every one in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Sure hope everyone is staying safe. Not only them, but also those chasing the snow in the mountains! Take lots of pics so the rest of us, who have to work :P, can enjoy it too! :D

49 over 38 here. With the cloud cover, I'm curious as to whether we'll make it down to 40 tonight. A sprinkles earlier, but nothing measurable here.

Well, I was wrong to doubt the NWS. My morning low was 36.9! That's the new low temp IMBY for this fall season. Currently, I'm under partly cloudy skies and wishing I could see some of those flakes that are so prominent on the Boone King Street Cam.

Yep, off to work, don't know how much I will be able to get on today, +drizzle and some wind, commute will be interesting.

Off Hatteras, NC -- Officials say a ship with 16 people onboard is sinking off our coast, which forced the crew to abandon ship into 18-foot waves and 40 mile per hour winds off the North Carolina coast.

The Coast Guard is working to rescue the crew of the HMS Bounty, a 180-foot, three-mast tall ship which was last marked about 90 miles southeast of Hatteras.

Just before 7:00 a.m., the Coast Guard aircraft crews were pulling the people off the life rafts.

The 16 people onboard the Bounty were forced to the life rafts just before 5:00 a.m. because the ship was sinking.

The Bounty's last position was about 160 miles from Hurricane Sandy's eye.

The crew did have cold weather survival gear.

The Coast Guard sent a C-130 and two rescue helicopters, HH60s, to rescue the crew.

We're told the crew had only handheld radios once they abandoned ship, so there was not contact until the aircraft got near the scene.

The Bounty was built for a 1962 film and has been featured in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

My favorite part of the GSP AFD:

THE SREF PLUME DIAGRAMS AT THE KAVL AIRPORT HAVE NEARLY 4

INCHES OF SNOW FOR THE EVENT. THIS IS OFTEN A RELIABLE SNOWFALL

TOOL. OF COURSE 4 INCHES AT THE AIRPORT WOULD TRANSLATE INTO EVEN

MORE TOWARD ASHEVILLE PROPER AND UP INTO THE HIGHER TERRAIN. FOR NOW

I/M LOWER THAN THIS AS I/M A LITTLE SKEPTICAL ABOUT A NW FLOW EVENT

DRIVING HEAVY SNOW THAT FAR SOUTH. HOWEVER...THIS IS ANYTHING BUT A

NORMAL SITUATION. THEREFORE...I/M PUTTING BUNCOMBE COUNTY IN THE

WINTER STORM WARNING. THIS IS VALID AS I DO HAVE 4 TO 6 INCH TOTALS

OVER THE NRN PARTS OF THE COUNTY. OTHERWISE THE SNOW TOTALS HAVEN/T

CHANGED MUCH WITH THIS PACKAGE.

Beat me to it Jason....I was shocked to see this. As usual it is not as windy in the northern part of the French Broad River Valley as it is down to the south. KAVL is reporting some nasty winds this am. Cold, windy, & misty as I was taking the kids to school. I did want to add this from the GSP AFD:

THE LATEST GFS ACTUALLY TAKES THE SYSTEM A LITTLE FARTHER TO THE

SOUTHWEST...BRINGING IT JUST NORTH OF WASHINGTON DC BY TUESDAY

MORNING. THIS RESULTS IN EVEN HIGHER QPF VALUES THAN BEFORE ACROSS

THE MOUNTAINS. THE BEST COMBINATION OF NW FLOW AND RATHER

SIGNIFICANT SYNOPTIC SCALE FORCING COMBINED WITH WRAP-AROUND

MOISTURE WILL BE TONIGHT AND INTO THE 3RD PERIOD. IT WILL BE A

HEAVY...WET SNOW AND COMBINED WITH THE STRONG WINDS WE LOOK TO BE

SETTING UP FOR A HIGH IMPACT WINTER STORM OVER THE NRN MTNS AND NEAR

THE TN LINE.

From the general weather board

Chris posted an image on his board, shows Sandy making the turn "Non updating image, NHC forecast track as of 5am EDT on 10/29, recon through about 6:35am, previous vortex messages plotted:"

dhBso.jpg

Looks like as Brandon pointed out last night this is more south than predicted originally. If it turns and then heads more in a southern direction, might some of those in central NC be in for a surprise?

Not to alarm anyone but we just had a strong shaking feeling here in McDowell County 30 minutes ago...it was felt county wide and some in Black Mountain felt it.

Keeping an eye on the USGS site...

We felt it here at about 7:45. Everything shook. Possible earthquake? Strange time for a sonic boom.

good grief, I wish I was in the nc mountains. sad.pngsad.png

Just a remarkable storm and to me the snow part of it is being under reported. Some parts of WV are expecting 3 feet plus of snow with blizzard warnings...because of winds of 60mph or more. Just insane. I'm so jealous of all the places getting this type of wild weather while all that can be expected here is windy conditions.

And to me it's amazing that a 85mph storm has a 946mb pressure....which of course we have seen cat 3 and cat 4's with that pressure..not to mention the little bit of convection near the center...and it's expected to strengthen. If pressures decrease that will only worsen the storm surge...as we all know the lower the pressure the more the ocean under and around the center increases/builds a bulge.

Media sure is hyping up this storm, which for once is warranted I think. . Guy on msnbc this morning was predicting 5 to 10 million people without power..which is just crazy.... and that is going to take forever to fix..he predicts, and I agree, it will take AT LEAST a week to get power back on if that is the case. I'm not even sure if he is taking into account the power outages due in part to the heavy snow, instead just the wind part of it.

And of course with the election coming up, that certainly presents some problems as far as turnout and counting the votes. So we might have to wait a while to get an official result. (BTW, don't turn this into anything political, I just want to mention the effect on the election in general).

Seriously there will probably be atleast one death due to someone parking on the side of the road to wait out the storm and getting lost in the snow drift....just imagine the size of the drifts up there due to the storm. Sides of one story houses might be close to being covered.

Exactly. These areas will be absolutely paralyzed due to the snow. And damage will be pretty severe. Unlike the mid atlantic area, they not only will have extreme winds, they will have very heavy wet snow..and a crap load of it...which will only increase down trees and power lines left and right. This is a very dangerous and extreme situation in the higher elevations but when you turn on the tv, it's all about the coastal and piedmont areas.

I'm always highly critical of the media, as everyone knows, but I don't blame them for focusing on these areas to be honest because this storm is likely to be very bad, especially coastal areas with the storm surge..which could really do some damage around long island/newyork. The huge wind field combined with the extra tropical transition will mean the highest winds will not possibly be near the center. And given the track, the storm surge will be really bad in the above mentioned areas to be sure.

However, the snow/wind part of it in the mountains will be crippling to most from at least northern western nc to wv. I know not a lot of people live there but with the lack of national media attention, I hope those there will understand how bad it will be.
