Hank Scorpio
@hank... hope you've got great homeowner's. it'll be ok - I put some big duct tape X's on the windows and I'll probably open them once the winds get going to equalize the pressure so the roof doesn't blow off. I figure combining the best of the hurricane prep steps with the best of the tornado prep steps should be 100% foolproof.

chris87
Right. If the impact isn't gigantic there's a good deal of time to resolve issues. But if people haven't early voted and have massive destruction etc they're not going to be rushing to vote. oh i'd agree, i just don't think you can assume it would hurt one more than the other...it really only matters in PA and VA (where the margins could potentially flip from turnout [and PA may be a stretch]), and you could make an argument that rural voters would more likely be affected by substantial damage to infrastructure. Ian
i'd suspect that it's more likely that the actual weather on election day will have a bigger effect than sandy on turnout If 10s of millions lose power and there is serious damage over a large area no one knows what the impact will be. In general yeah election day weather is the key... but I would not be too confident on anything until we know what happens.

stormtracker
One last thing about voting and I swear I'll move on....people don't realize what it takes to put on an election. I know I didn't until I started doing it. It's a massive coordination and organization effort. We have 143 precincts....I can't even begin to image New York City's Elections effort. I haven't had a day off in the last 9 days and I've got 10 more to go (if we aren't out tomm). People got angry yesterday waiting, and it's understandable, but there's so much we can do. One of our guys got spit on. We've never seen turnout like that...and to keep it weather related...I honestly do think 50% of it was Sandy related. I think we'll be shut down tomorrow and/or Tuesday. We'll likely open Wed, and if there is no power, open our central location and have manual paper ballots. That's going to be a mess. But I love it, a lot. I feel like I'm contributing to society. Corny, but whatev.

JeanineJ
Crazy isn't it? A lot of people are caught up in it being a hype train because with Irene, lets be honest it wasn't anything like people were originally saying. This is going to be one of the worst storms ever here, and people are lacking knowledge IRT it. The older people have a tendency to be a part of this, depending on their unique ways of life. PS wes, how many years younger is your neighbor than you? Hahaha Most people have left thier Halloween lawn ornaments and blow-up spiders out... they have no clue. Don Cherry's Jacket
Strange. My law firm just sent out an email saying the NY office woud likely be closed tomorrow and they would decide later about DC. I'm assuming that's largely a function of transit and Bloomberg, but we should not be making people come in tomorrow. Even if we let them leave early, it's asking for a disaster. Mrs.J
Winds are still pretty light up here in Frederick. Had some beautiful clouds about an hour ago. Went to early vote and the line is out the door into the parking lot, so turned around and went back home. Not sure if it is because it is Sunday or because of Sandy.
