Underground power FTMFW.

Power never flickered during Irene, Feb 2010 or the derecho. Lost power for about 4 hours back in that day of strong storms in early June. Longest in 3 years.

We have below ground power, too, but apparently during the derecho either something crushed part of a main transformer at a plant or one of the high tension wires got jacked. Basically, no power was getting to the neighborhoods because the power was cut at the source.

We lost power during the PSUHoffman storm for about seven hours, but the derecho cut us off for almost four days. Good thing we were of town for most of it.

I can easily juice my fridge and icebox with one of the outlets and use the other one for entertainment and a couple lights. And charging the zillion gadgets we all have.

We could consolidate our two fridges pretty easily. I love my TV, but I could sacrifice it for something else if needed. We have a gas stove, so that won't be an issue. I could juice up the FiOS and keep the iPad and phones charged, as well as run a few lights as needed. But my wife loves her space heater...

Thank goodness for car chargers that will power all our apple products haha

Derecho was 24 hours for us in McLean, but the Arlington Macroburst of July 3, 2011 dropped a tree on us and we were without power for about a week. Also without a roof for about 2 months, but that's a different story.

12 hours for both Irene and the derecho

Buy a coleman catalyst type propane heater. 100% safe for indoor use. We have one for camping in the fall but have kept rooms warm during long term outages like the psu storm.

The problem with space heaters is even the small ones draw 1,500 watts continuous and that probably equates to a 2k draw on the generator. The oil filled heaters are probably the way to go if you have to have one running. They typically have multiple settings and can keep things warm below 1k watts.

Anything that uses a heating element is bad for a typical generator. Not bad in the sense of the generator can't handle it. Bad in the sense that they hog up valuable juice. I'll take NFL over heat any day.

Edit: want to add that a simple and cheap inverter for the car kicks butt. Much faster charging than 12v and it can charge a laptop and things like that. Gotta run the motor but the speed of charging is great.

What kind of snow were we looking at on the Euro ensembles?

The 00z Euro Ensemble mean has the 1" line just north and west of I-95 running southwest to northeast... basically runs through MoCo and up to where I-83 hits the PA border.

Hence the need for the DGEX/Euro Ensemble blend. I magically combine those models and translate that beautiful area of 24"+ snow in North Carolina right to MBY!

Irene I was fine. A couple flickers during the event, but woke up and watched tv made coffee. And as a bonus, my new roof had just been put on and survived without leak. I was lucky, but was overdue to be on the good side of one of these.

Sorry Mark, but you have to account for the projection! You can't just copy and paste an area from diffrent latitudes on a mercator projection.

Thank you for speaking up, had I said it he would just call me snarky or something

NWS here took out our snow mention but man, Euro Ensembles hit us pretty hard with snow.

If they already had it in then they probably should have left it in. Even if it doesn't accumulate it could still fall, especially given the presentation on both Ensembles.
