Do the offices downtown typically lose power in these sort of storms?

none did during the derecho but some of the city did. but in a case like this not sure underground stuff helps if everything goes down.

I browse the other regional forums to get some different perspectives, and it's gotten to the point where I only go to the SNE forum for humor. The wishcasting and weenie-tastic nonsense is there is beyond absurd. I'm no expert - what I know I know from reading this forum carefully over the years - but I know self-interested selective model-hugging weenie-ism when I see it.

Those jokers are STILL posting about how the NHC is "brainwashed" and "dangerously misleading" and talking about "landfall ticking to the north" and "jumps to the NE"...Obviously CT Blizz is the worst, but there is a whole squadron of weenies engaged in laughably ridiculous wishcasting nonsense in that forum.

Don't get me wrong - there are some amazing mets in there, and every forum has its share of weenies - but the SNE forum is a giant cauldron of fail compared to the other regional forums on this board.

One thing I have noticed today with this storm: It was windy as heck this morning but it is a lot less windy tonight. Also we have only seen a small amount of drizzle.

I think that it will be less severe in northern Virginia but probably more severe in Maryland and north/northeast.

We'll see some rain and breezy weather tomorrow but nothing too bad.

I feel real sorry for people in Pennsylvania and Maryland who are going to lose power.

I like your positive attitude, but Virginia is going to lose lots of power. We haven't even started.

With this specific storm, 50 miles south means nothing. Dale city may dodge 70mph gusts and only get 4.5" of rain. That's about it. Lights out.

Agreed. I was in New Orleans for Isaac in August. 70 mph winds are pretty serious. Lots of power lines and large trees will come down. Especially since this area hasn't had a major long-term strong wind event like this in a long while. Darwinism will work its magic.

yay! except if I have power I still have to telework...until the office loses power.

Residential power will go down before commercial customers in almost all cases. Also worth noting.... some commercial buildings have redundant power. This means there are fed off of two different points on the electrical grid and can switch between them utilizing a "tie switch". In that case, there is a higher likely hood of them maintaining power. Finally, some buildings (or portions of bldg.s) have 100% emergency back up power through the use of batteries (large rooms of them) and diesel generators with very large fuel tanks.

These types of electrical system are typically found in larger buildings and hi-rises.

Unfortunately, the main distribution (sub station) is often times located below grade (basement/sub basement). This can expose the equipment to water, which will usually find it's way to the lowest elevation within the building....point of no return.

Evidence of failure as result of poorly located distribution systems (below grade) was illustrated during Isabel. Numerous buildings @ Baltimore's Inner Harbor were rendered electrically inoperable as a result of flooding their internal substations.

Metro shutting down tomorrow.

http://www.wmata.com...?ReleaseID=5362

In light of updated forecast information from the National Weather Service projecting higher wind speeds, as well as the closure of Federal Government offices in the Washington area and the possibility of widespread commercial power outages, Metro has announced the following service changes for Monday, October 29, 2012:

  • The Metrorail system will be closed on Monday. Rail service on Sunday night will continue operate as scheduled until its normal closing time (midnight). No decision has yet been made on when Metrorail service will be restored after Monday.
  • All Metrobus service will be suspended as of the end of the service day on Sunday and remain suspended until further notice.
  • All MetroAccess service has been cancelled on Monday.

Metro service will only be restored when it is safe to do so. Following the storm, Metro personnel will need to perform a comprehensive damage assessment, including inspections of track, bridges, aerial structures, stations and facilities. Service restoration also will be contingent on adequate commercial power to support operations and repair of any storm-related damage.

Customers are encouraged to
for information regarding restoration of service as information is known.
