Thursday Severe Threat Forecast Discussion

Monday Severe Weather

NWS Raleigh

Regarding the convective Mode and severe chances: the pre-frontal

convection is expected to occur in an environment characterized by

30-40 kts of 0-6 km bulk shear...owing to the presence of a middle

level speed vorticity maximum maintained by/coincident with the

pre-frontal convective band. Long and relatively straight forecast

hodographs would support primarily a wind threat...particularly with

any line segments that may form provided adequate destabilization

occurs ahead of the line. The approach of the aforementioned upper

trough will then promote markedly strengthening middle-upper

southwesterly flow...with 0-6 km bulk shear values increasing to

50-60 kts along the surface cold front. While the deeper moist axis

more supportive of convection will have progressed eastward with the

wcb...the magnitude of middle-upper forcing and cooling...and modest

surface frontal convergence/forcing...should support convection

vigorous enough to interact with the aforementioned increasing

environmental shear. The earlier long and straight forecast

hodographs become increasingly cyclonically-curved in the lowest

km...which when combined with the strong bulk shear oriented

relatively parallel to the surface front...would support a broken

line of storms -including supercells conditional upon

destabilization west of the earlier

wcb - all of which would be capable of producing damaging winds. A

threat of large hail and non-zero tornado threat would also

accompany any supercell.

At about 8:40 a.m. today, steam was still rising from a burn mark about 3 feet long in the asphalt and a nearby puddle of water in the parking lot was still warm.

Clarendon, Monroe County.

Tornado, reported by trained spotter.

A building was damaged in Clarendon... with parts of the

building out in the street. Many trees and power lines

were blown down. The entergy electic outage map indicated

the entire town of Clarendon was without power. Extra

state troopers are headed to Clarendon.

Well the threat tonight into tomorrow went to crap quick. The 0z NAM last night looked to be on the up and up, guess the runs this morning said otherwise.

This is better than nothing severe mid-october I reckon'...
