TalcottWx
Amazing what you can see on a one hour walk this time of year, from cars caked on ice to hearty October blooming montuak daisies to a wonderful sunrise over majestic LIS. snowman21
Awesome discussion! I want one on the mountain to watch snowfall remotely. How much might something like that cost? Anyone have any idea? I know they use them with good accuracy out west at spots like Alta, Utah. The sensors themselves are between $600 and $1200 - somewhere in that neighborhood depending on brand and capability. You need to buy a data logger/control unit, and those are often more expensive than the sensors themselves, though you could probably get away with using a cheap PC for that. CoastalWx
On a side note, ORH yesterday put up their first -10 departure since June. Today should be the 2nd....maybe be awhile again after that. I'm impressed ORH got to 29. Didn't think it would get that cold, I thought maybe a breeze from the W-WSW might keep them from getting below 30. Didn't think it would get that cold, I thought maybe a breeze from the W-WSW might keep them from getting below 30. They got there pretty early too...I was actually surprised that once it got to 29F by 4am, it didn't have one last fall near sunrise to like 27F...that often happens there. They might flat line for a bit, and then often right before sunrise or right around sunrise they will lose 1 or 2F more. It happened yesterday morning...though a little more than usual. They were near 40F and then dumped to 37F briefly around 6-7am.

Ice Warrior commander
I got down to 24.5F with a TD of 22F at 5:54AM. I went outside and looked at the heavy frost. Also took some pics of the waning cresent moon with venus at that time.. I took a few to show twilight creeping in. I'll post them later. What thread is best to post those in? Thanks Have a great day all.
CoastalWx
Scott you said earlier this morning that the gfs and euro were night and day this week, any chance you could elaborate? Thanks. Well basically the euro has a quick moving fropa, while the GFS develops a wave along the front and gives us decent rains Monday night and Tuesday morning. I suppose the GFS may be too aggressive with that, but not sure of the quick moving fropa that the euro has. Might be some sort of a compromise. We'll see if the 12z backs off. dendrite
Have you seen http://ccc.atmos.col..._Thesis_ALL.pdf I think this was part of the initial exploration of automating snow measurements for ASOS and the precursor to WFO GRR's experimental snow depth sensor. Some of the compaction models might help in making your sensor more accurate for real time accumulation use. I read a paper on the Judd snow sensors years ago, but I am not sure if that is the one. Thanks for the link though. I'll give it a read through. My big issue right now is finding a light intensity to voltage converter that focuses on the 880nm wavelength. Texas Instruments had produced some, but they've since been retired. I'm hoping to get some through a surplus distributor. I'd mount that and the 880nm LED at a 42° offset and then use a variation of the Beer-Lambert law to calculate the extinction coefficient. I'd assume the path length would be along the angle of the emitted IR to the photoelectric sensor. Then I can hopefully find the MOR value. I'll probably end up with results not even close to the actual visibility, but it'd be fun to try.

CoastalWx
Pattern still looking the same in the extended? Yeah looks like slow cooling of some sorts towards the end of the month. I wouldn't be shocked if we have a few alternating warm-cold shots in this pattern. Basically, while the ensembles means don't really show this...a pattern as shown is prone to storms cutting near the great lakes and New England. nzucker
it snowed here (canton NY) yesterday. No elevation. And you were right last weekend. We did get a frost. I was skeptical of developed areas like Dobbs Ferry having an early frost, but the low was 32.9F downtown with many readings around Westchester sub-32. Impressive cold shot for this time of year. My basil and eggplants got scorched by the frost.

ORH_wxman
So BDR and BDL both had record lows today...BOS and ORH no record but both had their earliest respective temp readings since 1993. MQE also set a record low...29F. Previous record was 30F in 1988 which was equaled in 1934 and 1936. The last October record low temperature at Blue Hill was in 1993. The last record low in any month was 2007 in that brutal early March 2007 outbreak.
