Jebman
I'll start this off. I am no forecaster or meteorologist, but Larry Cosgrove has stated that we are in a weak El Nino event into this winter and that a persistent trough will set up in the center of the US throughout the winter. Therefore the Washington region will experience changeable weather throughout the winter. We are located on the eastern side of that trough so we will have mild stormy episodes interspersed with colder, drier periods into late March 2013. I forecast total snowfall for Washington and Northern Virginia east of the mountains at 6 to 12 inches for the season. We will see a few colder periods which will support snow but there will be a lot of variability, just as we have already seen in September with warm moist weather and rain then chilly weather, then more mild, moist/rainy conditions. Expect this pattern all winter.

I think the next three winters will be frigid, much like those of the '70s. That forecast is based on a combination of factors, including Arctic volcanoes and ENSO. I don't know why...I just have a feeling.
