Yep this was very evident today. We started out at 51 degrees this morning and the cloud cover was very thick. Looked and felt a lot like late October. The temp dropped all day steadily until we are currently sitting at 38 degrees. Good call. Also it pretty much rained here all last night with big thunder also.

Wedge tried to erode last night...probably going to cause it to feel even more raw today with temps starting low and precip moving in. Most of western NC looks to be above freezing by at least 5 degrees in the cold spots.

Area forecast discussion

National Weather Service Charleston WV

558 am EDT Monday Oct 8 2012

Near term /through tonight/... models in fairly good agreement with disturbance moving across the region today. However...there will be a rain/no rain line across the area...making exact placement a bit of a challenge. Models indicate that elevations above 3500 feet could see some snow today. Snowshoe has been cold enough leading up to this event...that a very small accumulation is possible.

Love the reports of freezing precip in the high country! Only made it down to 48 this morning with all this cloud cover. 50 now. Very unusual clouds over the eastern escarpment yesterday at sunset. Check out my blog link below to see some pretty cool pics. Lots of linticulars....

Will today bring the first snowflakes of the fall season to the NC High Country in Avery County?

It's somewhat possible.

Beech Mountain has fallen back to 32.1 degress and Grandfather is at 32.9.

NWS Blacksburg

It is also worth noting...that the freezing level this morning is above 9000 feet. Despite it being chilly and thoughts of snow falling crosses your mind...temperatures will remain warm enough to keep all precipitation as liquid.

First time snow mentioned in the forecast discussion this season...

NWS Blacksburg

There is some minor concern for S- in the higher elevations of our WV

mountains...noting that rlx has included S- across Pocahontas

County. 850mb temperatures do drop into the -2c range sun across this

region...but current thinking is that the depth of the cold air

will not be sufficient to support ice Crystal growth to any extent.

Thus...have not included any mention of S- at this point.

If you follow wxsouth (Robert) you will see that this was no surprise. He mentioned this last week way before any others. He has proven this year he is the best in the south east. He predicted tornados in Alabama when Span said there wouldn't be any, He predicted severe weather a couple of weeks ago and DT said he would be wrong. Once again he was right and DT was wrong.

A chilly, raw, breezy day here in Clayton, and a pleasant surprise of .78" in the gauge today, and some bonus thunder to boot. Hovered between 48 and 50 all day. The recent rains in these recent events would have been really welcomed back in July and August, when the measurements were in the trace and hundredths. It'll make the yearly total look better, at least.
