It's really impressive to see one of our local stations break a cold record from the 1930's by 2 degrees.

Really impressive.....knock it out of the ballpark! A shining start, amongest a very mild year!

Yeah, it's been a very cold start to October especially central regions with early measurable snow at Duluth back in September.

The National Service reports on the early snowfall Friday at Duluth, Minnesota:

0.1 inches of snow fell in the late evening hours of Friday, September 21, 2012 at Duluth. This is the earliest snowfall of the season in 17 years. On September 21, 1995, 0.1 of snow fell on that day

It feels like we're deep into fall out there. Almost feels more like a mild winter day. Tomorrow I'll be back in shorts though

On another note the Red Maples are really firing up around here. I wish the city hadn't planted such a huge amount of sickly/dying Norway Maples and had planted Red Maples instead. They're really starting to look brilliant.

dews really jumping higher here past 2 hrs, going to be sad to see this great airmass leave

Im actually optomistic that as we get closer to november and into december were actuallg going to start to reverse this positive departure streak we've been in. Im going to go out on a limb and say were gonna get more record cold and this merely being just a preview of whats to come

Clear and calm here in Monmouth - light south wind has died for the time being. Temp down to 46.7F after a high of 56F and morning of 30F. Let's see how low we can go before the WAA begins in earnest.

I think we're heading back up now. We're going to have our high come just before midnight therefore busting up the large negative departure that should have been recorded for all intents and purposes.

Huh? The temperature is not going to rise that much with mostly clear skies and radiational cooling taking place. I'm at 47.8F after a high of 53.2F, so I can't see my location having a midnight high with only two hours to go. We'll get a solid negative departure with 53/33 here versus an average of 66/45, about -12 on the day. Yesterday was -8 here.

Central Park is at 51F. Their daytime high was 53F so WAA isn't going to affect the negative departure.

Down to 34.0F this morning. I'm not ultimately satisfied with this cold snap. I think one thing that separates this from other historical cold snaps is the length it lasted. This one only lasted a day before it was all said and done. Something else I noticed was that this is like what the pattern was like last winter. You'll get a day or 2 of cold air, then warmer air infiltrates back and stays for a while before you get another day or two of well below average temps. Not good if you want a cold and snowy winter, unless the pattern changes.

Temps went up at all city stations starting a few hours ago. I thought they would creep up at a degree an hour considering the wind speed and direction but the latest report kept them steady.

With our highs being in the low 50s I thought we would be a bit higher than that by midnight therefore erasing some of the negative departure. I guess that's not happening unless we rise at the 11 and 12 o'clock reports. We'll see.
