Stormlover74
I don't know that it weakened much. There was no lightning or thunder associated with this line and I didn't hear of many wind gusts above 50mph further west. definetly weakened as it entered middlesex county nj - no thunder or lightning winds about as high as they were gusting all day and 10 minutes of heavy rain
BxEngine
Because severe warnings were issued for my area just before the storm hit was not really severe at all with no thunder and lightning and winds gusting under 50 There are other parameters for severe storms than thunder and lightning. NorthNJwx
Line came through here (Oakland, NJ) with extremely heavy rain - instantaneous rates approached 10"/hr for a moment. Not a ton of wind in the squall line, with a peak gust of 20 (gusts up to 29 during the day); though I live in a deep valley amid rugged terrain. It'll probably be more impressive out over the flatter and coastal areas to the east, but the surface translation wasn't anything huge here in interior North Jersey. Luckily, the story is definitely a bit different for my other Davis weather station on Long Beach Island.
jm1220
Winds quite strong here, gusts over 50 mph I assume. A pretty large tree branch came down around the corner from me, that I saw driving home from work.
NJStorms
We have nothing but wind. Not more than a small splash of rain. We should be getting the edge any minute. Being on the water, the wind is coming from everywhere.
CooL
Easily the best "storm" of the year for my backyard, but that's not saying much. The wind was strong but not strong enough to do anything major

NorEaster27
guys, I repeated this multiple times today. The strongest winds are always out ahead of the rain in these setups...the best LLJ is east of the line of rain....the best winds were about an hour ahead of the line under max LLJ. Superstorm93
Not a bad storm Had lightning and thunder with some power flashes in spots. Wind might have topped in the mid-40s. Rain was by far the most impressive aspect. Turned my street into a river in ten minutes. Sent from Tapatalk

The strongest winds are always out ahead of the rain in these setups...the best LLJ is east of the line of rain....the best winds were about an hour ahead of the line under max LLJ. The winds seem to still be strengthening here. Not the "roar" I heard on 3/13/10 but definitely impressive. It's probably just along the immediate coast but it's windy enough to knock down a weaker tree or two given full leaves. The higher gusts are in the 50s I'd say. I think you mean to say the best mixing tends to be east of the rain - I don't think it's the LLJ that is necessarily further east. Light rain seems to usually have the effect of hindering mixing, while heavy rain seems to help mixing. It all depends, though, and I've seen winds increase with light rain on some occasions and decrease with heavy rain on others. Today, the rain (and sunset; it doesn't matter that it was overcast) seemed to hinder mixing. I remember 12/1/10 being an exception, though, with strong winds right through the squall line. So you're the weather station just up the river from me! Mine was never online, and it currently is in need of some repair, so I check in with your page whenever I need info. There was only one other when mine went online in 2006. Lines really have been breaking up just to our west frequently this year. It happens way too often! LongBeachSurfFreak
The beach was fun. Gusts in the mid 50s I would think Yeah minus the sand blowing in my eyes. During the gusts it was almost strong enough to hold me up leaning into the wind. Easily 50 if not more. Since Im always down at the beach during high wind events its time to purchase a hand held anemometer!!!

NorEaster27
Not at my parents, the strongest gust was with the squall line. That maybe due to the inland location mixing best winds with the rain line compared to coastal locations which had a better environment to mix the LLJ when it was at its strongest. Dsnowx53
Yeah minus the sand blowing in my eyes. During the gusts it was almost strong enough to hold me up leaning into the wind. Easily 50 if not more. Since Im always down at the beach during high wind events its time to purchase a hand held anemometer!!! Yeah especially on the boardwalk! It was much more manageable on the beach itself since all the dry, loose sand was blown near the boardwalk and on it. I definitely should have brought goggles or something. I need a hand-held anemometer, too. But once I faced the ocean on the beach, I could barely stand.
kevbo81
ive notice an increase in activity to our south. it's been previously pointed that the storms from teh mid atlantic are heading towards nyc and the northern part of the line is affecting the hudson valley. think we have a few hours still yet to go before it clears completely. NorEaster27
The TJFK velocities do not agree. The high wind speed at JFK looks to be about an hour before the main line of rain, you do no agree the strongest LLJ was about an hour ahead of the line? All the data near the coast shows this. Drz1111
there was a broad cyclonic circulation with that embedded cell that just zipped up the East River. Here on the far east side, we had a brief but very clear windshift, followed by a shift back to the south as the cell shot by.
