bluewave
Lots of newspaper articles and photos, videos http://www.hurricane...icanedonna.html You put a really nice page together on Donna. I started a thread last summer after someone posted vintage Donna footage from Island Park, NY here on the South Shore.
HurricaneJosh
Cool topic for a thread! And in case anyone's interested, here are the impact intensities, by state, as per the latest reanalysis work. I should emphasize that these findings are not yet official: FL (Keys) - Cat 4 (115 kt) NC - Cat 2 (95 kt) VA - Cat 1 NY (Long Island) - Cat 2 (85 kt) CT - Cat 1 RI - Cat 1 So, even though Donna's intensity was probably overestimated historically, across the board, the storm's reputation as the only one to bring hurricane winds to Florida, the Mid-Atlantic, and New England survives reanalysis: it was apparently a bona-fide hurricane in all regions. The 85 kt for NY means it was a substantial hit for that state, but not as strong as 1938 (105 kt), Carol 1954 (100 kt), or 1944 (95 kt).
Turtle
Don't have any personal stories on this event, since I was born three DAYS before Donna hit New England!!! However, as my mother was still in the hospital with me, my parents told me the story of how my "nutty" dad was the only father that drove through the hurricane to visit his wife and first child (me). The nurses let Daddy stay with us as long as he wanted, as the winds howled and trees blew all over the place! Both my parents are back together now (dad died over 30 years ago, and mum passed last September <9/14>), but I will always remember this story. My husband, however, has a great story of his own. He's from Fall River, MA (on the RI border near Tiverton), and the eye passed very close. He found a parakeet on his front yard after the storm passed by, likely carried in the storm's eye! He was only 5 years old at the time, and remembers it vividly. Unfortunately, the parakeet died a little while after (his cat got it <uhoh!>). He credits Donna (ironically, his older sister's name!) for instilling a strong interest in weather, and especially hurricanes, in him. Those are my stories of Hurricane Donna. --Turtle
