turtlehurricane
Anyone know if there is a known flood stage for Shell Beach? NWS page states "unavailable" and no historic crests available http://water.weather...=lix&gage=shbl1 The flood stage is probably 2 ft there, total swamp. Surge just crossed 11 ft, 9 ft short of Katrina... Gusting to 89 mph at pilot town directly parallel to the river.

turtlehurricane
Rise of the Mississippi at New Orleans accelerating again, 12.38 ft as of midnight, so up 0.39 ft in an hour. Reports that the pumps have been shut off in parts of Plaquemines from the surge, no point pumping water that's gonna flow right back over. Might be that the whole east bank is being overtopped since it's 11 ft at Shell Beach + 10-20 ft waves.
wxsniss
perhaps this belongs in Banter but almost empty now and want to share with others who can appreciate... I'm absolutely astounded by this weather phenomenon: a stalled tropical cyclone, almost stationary dumping rain on New Orleans, exactly 7 years after Katrina. If GFS/Euro are correct, this will continue through much of Wednesday.

isohume
I agree with everything Turtle has been saying. The worst surge isn't even occurring yet. Once this band of 80-90 mph surface winds moves ashore, your going to see some heavy surge rises. Absolutely textbook spot for funneling. Where do you see that at? turtlehurricane
Surge steadying out at Shell Beach, probably from wind blowing towards the other side of the bay. Water is now pushing directly into Lake Pontchartrain and surge is up to 4.5 ft, highest levels so far. Highest levels of the night have maintained themselves at the delta tip too. West of the Mississippi is just beginning, 3.6 ft at Grand Isle, probably even higher to the east. I wonder if anything is even above water though lol

Derecho!
on the same exact day of hurricane katrina. wow. wondering if the morning news will look like this again South Plaquemines Parish is a really, really, really long way from New Orleans (tip of the Delta) and there are zillions of levees. So no, it won't look that way in the morning.

jconsor
Isaac's wind impacts on land have overperformed IMHO, especially considering how its convection has fallen apart and become much less symmetrical in the past 6 hours. I've collected some of the more impressive gusts. Some peak gusts from WeatherBug stations: Poydras, LA: 97 mph: http://weather.weatherbug.com/LA/Saint%20Bernard-weather.html?zcode=z6286&stat=PYDRS (about 10 miles ESE of New Orleans on e. bank of Mississippi River) Chalmette, LA: 79 mph (http://weather.weatherbug.com/LA/Chalmette-weather.html?zcode=z6286&stat=CHLMT) (about 7 miles E of New Orleans on e. bank of Mississippi River) Jefferson, LA: 70 mph (http://weather.weatherbug.com/LA/New%20Orleans-weather.html?zcode=z6286&stat=NOJPS (about 5 miles W of downtown New Orleans on e. bank of Mississippi River) Peak gusts from Weather Underground stations: Belle Chasse, LA: 80 mph (http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KLABELLE4&day=29&year=2012&month=8) (about 10 miles SE of New Orleans on e. bank of Mississippi River) New Orleans, LA - 69 mph (http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KLANEWOR33&day=28&year=2012&month=8) (Freret Street, very near downtown:) NWS stations: New Orleans NAS: 79 mph (http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KNBG/2012/08/29/DailyHistory.html) Peak gust occurred in past hour.
