HalloweenGale
The data from UCC doesn't show anything close to 66" in Houlton records. Their biggest snowstorm was March 17-19, 1981 with 29.2". Christmas 1989 gave them a bit (recorded on 12/26) and they had 17.4" on 12/3/89. I'd be interested in more info on that 5.5-footer, as my data sources aren't always correct. I got that record from the UCC. Says that 33" fell on the 24th and 25th. The data must be wrong (either that, or that was some mega band of doom.) Here's what I have for those 2 days: .....................high....low...precip...snow...snow depth 12-24-1989....8.1....-27.........0........0.......33 12-25-1989...16.....-14.1.......0........0.......
ORH_wxman
I dont remember anything on 12/25/89...even for the Cape, though maybe it happened. I recall an offshore storm on the 24th which was the one that gave coastal South Carolina their epic snowstorm. I don't think it got close enough though to hit the Cape outside of maybe flurries. HalloweenGale
http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KACK/1989/12/24/DailyHistory.html KACK http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KHYA/1989/12/24/DailyHistory.html?req_city=NA&req_state=NA&req_statename=NA KHYA http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KEWB/1989/12/24/DailyHistory.html?req_city=NA&req_state=NA&req_statename=NA KEWB Then, this is a great example of inconsistencies in the UCC data. Because I know I clicked on Snow (in.) not Snow Depth (in.)
tamarack
My recollection of Christmas Eve 1989 was that it was clear and cold where I then lived, 9 miles south of AUG, coldest morning of a very cold month. Looks like there was snow on the Cape, but the strong HP to the north kept it away from Maine.

So it does look like they got barely scraped. But definitely not a 8" snowstorm. ACK's obs don't look much heavier, they have a few 2 mile -SN obs so maybe they got an inch or so. HalloweenGale
January 20-22nd 1990. I was able to get the right amounts. Looks like a swath of 10" fell across N. MAss. The cape got like an inch or something of that order.
HalloweenGale
January 4th, 1988 and January 8th/9th of 1988. The latter because the storm dropped snow as far south as Memphis, TN. The former was a potent little mover.
HalloweenGale
THe February 11-13, 1988 storm was underrated. The winter of 87/88 had a few underrated events. Happy Turkey Day to all.

Chrisrotary12
Where were you when this happened? Not sure if I responded to this. I was in Brockton. Was a sophomore in High School. The bell rings at 2:03 pm. Walking to the bus it was rain. It was sleet by the time the bus left at 2:15. And white out snow by 2:25. So maybe more like 25 mins. But i vividly remember walking in the center of the road trying to get home from the bus stop. From the bus stop to my house was about a tenth of a mile. Took us 10 mins probably. Halfway home the lightning started. Even though I have seen a tornado, the coolest weather moment of my life was standing in the middle of my road surrounded by flashes of lightning not being able to see 100 feet in front of me.
