Glacier Gorge

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado is a cool place in general, but when you are in the Glacier Gorge section of the park, you just constantly have the sense that you are somewhere very special. Here are a few pics from two trips I've made there recently.

The Arrowhead.

McHenry's Peak from the lower gorge.

Shelf waterfall on a creek that flows 1000ft to the valley floor.

A view of the massive Longs Peak massif from the top of the shelf.

Lonely Shelf Lake. There isn't an official trail up here, so it's quiet and really quite serene.

A view of the upper gorge. From left to right is Longs Peak, Keyboard of the Winds, Pagoda Mountain, the Spearhead, and Chiefs Head Mountain.

I already can't wait to go back!

shame there's no snow left, does it normally melt out completely or was this just another low year snow wise?

A little bit of both really. Typically by late August into early September the non-glacial snow and ice are pretty much gone. But this year a lot of the terrain was already bare by mid June, which is indeed atypical. We had an extremely dry late Winter and Spring, and the mountain snowpack definitely took a hit. You can see the early end to the snow season in this graph:
