CoastalWx
West-northwest. It was taken from the shoulder of the southbound NJ Turnpike truck lanes. No wonder why it runs a bit warm with those wind directions. Forky doesn't believe it.
famartin
No wonder why it runs a bit warm with those wind directions. Forky doesn't believe it. Technically its sited correctly... more than 100 feet from pavement in all directions. Realistically, with that much pavement around the area, there's hardly a wind direction which won't run warm. NYCSuburbs
Does anyone know anything about Teterboro's station? It's also in NE NJ, has temps similar to but a bit cooler than Newark on the hot days, but is sometimes much warmer than surrounding stations, even Newark, with recent examples 8/17, 8/10 and 8/8. Newark has actually been in line with nearby stations in NE NJ/La Guardia recently during most days.

The Teterboro ASOS is located on the north section of the airport, between the touchdown zones for Runway 19 & 24. On the top of the image is Route 46. The holding pad just to the south of the ASOS is used when Teterboro is using Runway 24 for departing traffic (which is preferred these days). Unfortunately, aircraft are frequently pointed facing south so their jet blast is usually pointed at the sensor site. I'll try to get a picture of it next time I'm there. I *think* it used to be on the other side of the runway complex closer to the terminals, but I can't access the documents to confirm that at present. It ain't ever 4 degrees warmer than me, less than 2 mi from EWR as a crow flies, at a station cited official NWS CO-OP, so I don't know who "everybody" is. You always manage to get sky conditions with these. Some of the others are inconsistent.

I wonder where the sky conditions for Frog Hollow are coming from... I have yet to see a personal wx station with a ceilometer. Haworth is a NJ WxNet station, btw (run by the Office of the NJ State Climatologist).

Not working right now. Teterboro seems to have it consistently. Anyway, if people don't care about the sky conditions you can still seem to get current conditions per the above two links. Other decent options but rarely do I see a wind report, these usually say calm always: http://www.wundergro...th=08&year=2012 http://www.wundergro...th=08&year=2012 http://www.wundergro...th=08&year=2012 http://www.wundergro...th=08&year=2012 http://www.wundergro...th=08&year=2012

Yeah all the asphalt has no effect on its temp and co-op stations never have issues. EWR has been running a little warm for a while.
CoastalWx
The point is Analog, EWR seems to run warm and I think that pic explains part of the reason. I know where the airport is and I know the area nearby is urban...but it is south of the downtown area which has even more man made building materials. It just seems to run a bit warm in the summer, which makes sense when the albedo of asphalt is able to soak in the increased solar insolation. CoastalWx
it's a warm location... have you ever driven through urban ne nj? Of course and obviously 4 degrees is an exaggeration, but the ASOS itself probably does get a nice plume of warm air blowing in on west winds from the tarmac etc. That's why I asked what direction that faces. It makes sense that it may run a degree or so warmer.

How come I can sometimes be even a degree or two warmer than they are when there's a West wind? Is my West wind blowing off the tarmac of Roselle or Warninanco Park? ag3
there's more tarmac at lga But there's a body of water (a real one) surrounding it. LGA is a very good weather site for Manhattan and Western half of Queens. But is aweful for night time lows for the more suburban areas of Northeast and Eastern Queens. But overall, I think LGA is the best out of all 4 stations (EWR, NYC, JFK) for our area.

There's a lot of factors that could influence your temps. EWR is in a generally warm area with a lot of built up urban environment that happens to have a huge tarmac right to its west. Its difficult to compare a home thermometer to an ASOS anyway. The difference in siting is often drastic.

You are comparing a home Davis or whatever you have to an ASOS? I'm surprised you're asking me this as a meteorologist. You of all people should know about the mesoscale aspects that can affect temps whether it's at an airport ASOS/AWOS or home station. At least I think you should know. There's a lot of variables, for sure. My place in Elko is 2 miles east of the EKO ASOS, and about 20 feet higher. High temps on my Davis run almost identical, sometimes +1 or 2, sometimes -1 or 2. At night it tends to run cold; my place appears to be more sheltered and radiates a bit better.

I think I agree for most of the NYC area but for parts of SI and a good chunk of Middlesex, Union and Essex - EWR is more repersentative of temps. I have been tracking nearby sites to EWR in Linden, TEB, etc.. and there are many times EWR is the coolest. Even compared to New Brunswick EWR is best, LGA is close too, but like yuo aid night time lows are very warm there. I think the better aregument is the C/NE-NJ corridor runs warmer than surrounding areas in NYC and N-NJ as a whole, and Newark more accurately reflects that. My site has been described as "cited pefectly." Point is, I should be cooler, NOT warmer or equal to EWR if this is all correct.

I feel that EWR and NYC are both affected though by certain factors. LGA is always steady and dryness, clouds, sunshine, etc. don't affect it as much as KNYC and KEWR. I do think LGA night time lows are accurate but more for Manhattan and western sections of Queens. I live in Astoria and KLGA night time lows are almost always exact to my home station.
