I don't think that's surprising, however.

The levees there are the same as they were pre-Katrina. The storm's slow motion and impressive wind field would result in serious storm surge. If you look at Plaquemines Parish on a map it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that it flooded!

Yes there will be serious flood damage in vulnerable areas but not something that was unexpected. A catastrophe is not in the making though of course if you're house is flooded than it is a catastrophe. We won't see "unrivaled" damage and we really won't see anything remotely close to Katrina.

The new levees around New Orleans and the existing levees on the other side of Ponch are holding. In addition MRGO appears OK as well. From that I can tell outside of Grand Isle (which had serious wind damage... not surprising with sustained hurricane for hours) and Plaquemines parish things are going very well.

Small caveat being that some places will see impacts greater than Katrina. And that will be used in typical hyperbolic fashion by media outlets to trump up Isaac for the entire area. Plaquemines Parish was always going to see much greater storm surge from Isaac than Katrina, because they were always in line to experience onshore winds this time around. 12' surge is really little surprise there, and right in line with 48+ hour forecasts.

Yes, you're correct. I should have been more clear. Given the storm's location areas like that will get hit quite hard. This, however, was all very well forecasted and in line with expectations of what a slow moving legit cat 1 could do.

Absolutely false. Army Corps of Engineers told parish president that levees would hold in PP and there was nothing to worry about.

Please stop. A storm surge of up to 12 feet was expected and the parish was under a mandatory evacuation. The levee did "hold" in that it did not breach however it was overtopped.

The army corp of engineers was interviewed last night and said there was no threat of flooding from breached or overtopped levees. In fact a little over 8 pm gave the PP the "all clear".

Its well documented.

I heard that.

The Army Corps can answer for that.

The forecast, however, indicated significant storm surge flooding in that area and there was a mandatory evacuation. Why a PR guy from the Army Corps was on TWC giving people information on how to stay safe is the better question.

I don't think anyone... given the track... is surprised by what's happening in Plaquemines.

I heard that live on TWC, yes indeed he absolutely said exactly what you quoted.

The downplaying of a serious situation by some are nauseating and irresponsible. Nothing but facts in this thread, if thats no big deal, and this is a typical cat 1 then so be it.

My heart goes out to all those that have once again have lost everything, I pray there is no loss of life, really too bad the project to reinforce the levees further south was not completed, it would have made all the difference.

Yes... I heard it as well.

Why a PR person at the Army Corps was on TWC giving emergency managers information second hand is mind boggling. Why it was a surprise to the Army Corps that hours of SE fetch could cause the MS river to back up and overtop a levee is equally surprising.

However it seems that the Parish did tell people to get out prior to the storm and forecasts indicated a severe storm surge there.
