Baroclinic Zone
On what date will all the major climo stations report their first inch of snow. This is the list I have of all the major climate stations in New England out of the various forecasting offices.. Please correct me if I missed any. I think a deadline of Aug 31st at midnight is good. Taunton, MA (BOX) BDL ORH BOS PVD Gray, ME (GYX) KAUG KCON KGYX KLEW Burlington, VT (BTV) KBTV KMPV KCDA KMVL KVSF KRUT Upton, NY (OKX) KBDR Albany, NY (ALY) KPSF Caribou, ME (CAR) KBGR KCAR KHUL KMLT
wxmanmitch
While this depends somewhat upon on how you're defining a "major" climo station, for ALY you missed AQW (North Adams) and DDH (Bennington). I'm not quite as familiar with the other zones, so I'll leave it to others to chime on on this. Good contest, I'll come out with my guesses a little later on. danstorm
Fun contest... perhaps we could make it interesting? Forum probably doesn't allow/encourage this kind of thing but I see 20 stations... each member wagers $1/station for a total of $20. Winner of each climo site takes the pot, split if there is a tie...

powderfreak
Thanks for chiming in Mitch. I was thinking places that have daily/monthly F6 data. While I like that you included the BTV climate spots, of those, only the BTV airport reports snowfall on it's F-6 climate report because the WFO is there. All the others are ASOS stations that do temps and melted precip.
ORH_wxman
Wow are those 2006 numbers for real? No idea it took that long to get an inch. Don't you remember how pathetic that year was through mid January? Even up in BTV they were under 20" until after mid-January. The pattern turned better after that (esp for NNE), but it was a horrific beginning.

Oh yeah it was awful but 2/14 for BOS is amazing....I mean getting through all of Dec and Jan without even a rouge snow shower or something is impressive for a SNE site. It was awful up north too obviously but it's hard to fathom how rare it is to go that late without even a WINDEX inch or dying squall or wet 1" coating after rain, etc.
Damage In Tolland
I see where BDL and PVD did not get the inch. I do remember the 50 mile per hour winds and Tolland schools closing. We had 1.2 inches and snowcovered rds and of course no school

snowman21
Wow are those 2006 numbers for real? No idea it took that long to get an inch. It didn't. In the 2006-07 season, BOS reached one inch on Jan 23, 2007. It is true that it took until Feb 14, 2007 for the first event to deliver one inch or more of snow, but as far as seasonal totals go, BOS surpassed the one inch mark on Jan 23 with 0.6 inches of snow to add to their 0.8 seasonal total at that point. HoarfrostHubb
That first part of 2006-2007 was simply awful. But then it was pretty decent, unlike this past disaster

All the others are ASOS stations that do temps and melted precip. PSF is an ASOS and they no longer measure snow there manually. At one point there was a reliable weather observer who meticulously measured snowfall there for many years, but that is no longer the case. As such, the local paper bases their snowfall measurements off of modeled snow depth and it's frequently wrong. Usually it's an under measurement, especially the lake effect leftovers and upslope events. Many times we'll get an inch or two of this stuff and the modeled snow depth reports little or no change for some reason. Even in storms, it is sometimes too low. That said, I think that only sites where a human measures snow should be used. I'll bet we get some upslope event in November where we get 2" of snow and the paper will record it as 0.4". The pattern turned better after that (esp for NNE), but it was a horrific beginning. NNE for sure... Had 19" thru Jan 31, 2007 (historically the 1st half of winter, for snowfall) and 76" from there on, including 37" in April. Only 2001 has had a better 2nd half since I moved here in May 1998. (And only 1993 joins it if one includes 1986-98, my years in Gardiner.)

ORH_wxman
Nov 7th for ORH/BDL/PVD...BOS only got 0.4" so they didn't make it for the 1" criteria. But all the climo sites are on the scoreboard for measurable.
