Yesterdays Sky Conditions

Recommended Posts

Had a front/boundry move through the area yesterday. Was outside seeing if anything Photographic became of it.

First Image: 1:16p.m. Cumulus initiation. Looking north.

Second Image: 5:21p.m. Here comes some cells. The clouds to the far left are the tops of a cell that had some radar indicated hail just west of Lafayette. It fell apart before it got to my location. I was hoping the build up in the center would take off but it disappeared completely in less than 15 minutes. Looking north again.

Last image: 5:37 p.m. Looking east. The back side of a low topped cell or two. The color looks wrong to me. Like there is too much red. and I tried to take some red out. I guess this shows the limitations of shooting .jpg.

All images were shot with a 24-70mm zoom with a circular polarizer and one NGD.

The last image looks pretty natural to me.

Thanks. It is good to hear another view point to the image. Maybe it is fine the way it is.

maybe a bit overexposed?

According to the histogram, no. With this new camera it even gives a separate histogram for the Green, Red and Blue channels. None of them are over-cooked so that is not the problem. Maybe it is just a perception thing with me. When using a NGD filter I am used to the sky getting lighter closer to the horizon. Just look at the first image for example. Looking in that direction with the clouds (and maybe even a little rain), the sky does not get lighter towards the horizon. Maybe that is throwing me for a loop because I am NOT seeing what I normally see.

Since you have an amazing camera I'd recommend using iso 400 or higher for these shots with f/11 aperture. You are really using a slow shutter speed which will make it harder to get good results handheld or with motion. Also try switching from AWB to cloudy mode. I think you have a really good eye for composition, all those images are pleasant to look at.

I agree I need to get a new puter so I can shoot RAW again. That way I can play to my hearts content with the white balance and every other facet of the image. Till then I have to get it right with each click shooting .jpg's. And I have to respectfully disagree about the upping the ISO. I am an old film guy and have no trouble shooting slow. I have and use a tripod religiously and when not on that I am on a monopod most of the other times. I also have the mirror lock-up activated most of the time. While I may miss shots not getting set-up in time, I rarely mess them up due to shake.

I get what you're saying and it sounds good for you, but I am totally drooling over the performance of it on paper (I looked at your exif data). It looks better at 3200 iso than my camera does at 400.
