A beautiful sunny 48 degrees this morning in Bretton Woods, NH. A couple of maples with some red branches already.

Big diurnal range here today with high forecast into the low 80's. Looks like the 2nd half of my vacation week goes in the crapper.

Off to summit MTW...

Probably stressed.

This reminds me of this time last year and Pete and MPM were claiming the leaves were changing already..lol.

What does that mean?

What would be the stress? Plenty of rain up there. Work hours? Mortgage.? Pregnant wife?

Some trees always get stressed. Obviously some years are worse than others. The fact that some trees have a little color tells you it is stress from something. It ain't because of Fall.

Yeah, birch seem to be the first trees, I've noticed, to drop leaves in dry conditions.

When was it Phil went to Loon last year and reported on the change at the highest peaks? Felt like fall anyways this morning COC

Sounds rather similar to human hair, and baldness. Kevin probably lost most of his hair from stressful winter forecasting scenarios.

We have a 35 stand of 40 foot white birches at work in front of the building. Every year they drop leaves in mid summer and every year someone tells me they are drought stricken. It's too funny because there is a lawn irrigation system that waters them too.

Birches, especially white birch, seem to shed some yellow and brown leaves every August, though dryness also seems to increase the early drop. By mid-August, the red maples on swampy sites will be showing some significant color regardless of temperature - it's just what they do around here.

Early month is running almost +5 for MBY, though today will finish about -2 and drop the 8/1-7 departure closer to +4.
