New England Early August Discussion, banter, obs

Last summer was hot but not as hot as 2010 was which was far worse. This summer has been comparable to date to 2011...you are correct on that front. Some may find that impressive or extreme...I don't. I found 2010 impressive here. I find this summer impressive in the M.A. or midwest, but not really in New England. If we can put up a +3 in August, then I'd be impressed. Its hard to get impressed with the summer as a whole when 1 of the months is below average...the other two better be at least +3 or higher.

Likewise I doubt you would be extremely impressed with a winter if one of the months was above average and the other two weren't threatening records for cold or snow.

CDD wise 12 is cooler. Perception and time versus fact. I agree been a warm summer but like you said not impressed.

I would take a Jan 11 Feb 34 if the other months were snowless + 5 months though, ha.

Well those were record breaking months...Jan '11 for snow in your area and Feb '34 for cold (along with quite a bit of snow too). So those are the types of months you need to generally change the view on a season if the other months are the opposite signs.

Well it may be considered by some to be extra-ordinary by some as no one thought this summer would be anywhere near as hot as last. My energy usage in July was 79 per day as compared to 78 last summer. IMO this year has rivaled last's in terms of heat and last summer's temps impressed quite a few in the met. community if i recall correctly.

The max temps for June/July (2/3 of met summer) for BOS and PVD ended up with a departure of 0. BOS pulled off a +4.3 for max temps last July 2011 highlighted by a 103/81 day and 10 days of 90+. This July had 6 days of 90+ and only one day warmer than 91. It's been warmer back your way, but 90s aren't rare in your area. The number of heat waves is a bit misleading since all of them have been exactly 3 days.

It has been warm since the end of June and overall for 2012, no doubt. But this hasn't been a record breaking summer for our region. Further west across the OH valley and the plains that may be a different story.

Looks like BAF was warmer this July than last so you're probably correct for your area, but outside of the S CT Valley I think most would feel last summer was more oppressive. Like Will said though, 2010 trumps the last 2 Julys for just about everyone.

I think the persistent neutral to -NAO has helped eastern areas avoid the major heat.

Great seeing you again QPF MPM. How did Momma do? If any of you guys are going to Foxwoods and want to stop by the museum, which is literally within eye site, let me know. Turtle, Joe Lundberg, Cold Miser, MPM have all stopped by.

She had a good race. Heat/humidity was awful for running though.

Meanwhile, looks like my first showers are just a few minutes away, a few rumbles in the mix.

Yeah this summer doesn't stand out up here...been very pleasant minus the last five days.

June was +1F and July +1.1F up here with below normal lows. Montpelier was +0.4 and St Johnsbury was -1.1 for July.

Last summer was an all out torch up here.

Though the numbers from CEF are warm, that's definitely in the minority though for New England.

Obviously areas south and east are going to be warmer like LL and CEF as they are closer to the Midwest heat and further from the influences of -NAO.

The board will crash on the day he says the weather could be better and it's not quite a perfect day.

He has a great enthusiasm for life though. LL is a character, life is full of characters, thank god we are not populated with rote humorless posters. BSE day Tuesday though. Surfs up, waters warm, hopefully my back is better by then. In the mean time I am enjoying his BSE day in the AC recovering watching Olympics, Yanks! and LOL ing at weather boards.

yup-a good traveler knows to pass on I95 in Western CT.....

A recent discovery - state route 80 about 5-10 miles north of 95. Coming back from the Bos area on a Sunday afternoon 2 weeks ago, bypassed bumper to bumper traffic on 95 from about the Lyme areas to New Haven, by picking up 80 in the Essex/Deep River area (had to get onto 9 and take it north for several miles to get to it). Not too many lights, road was straight and averaged about 60 mph.
