Funny, when I lived in Shrewsbury I encountered the same thing, then I move and the winter of '10-11 is epic in SNE, then tornadoes the following summer, etc... and I am now in metro Denver and experiencing the driest, least stormy (except for one good night with epic hail a couple months ago) year in like forever. "A watched atmosphere never boils"...WTF??

i have lived in shrewsbury for the past 16 years and it seems like t-storms have a knack of weakening or missing right to the north or south. i have never seen severe criteria wind (5/98 I wasn't home) and never severe criteria hail. Ive actually only witnessed hail here 3 times imby and never larger than peas.

Geezus look at the baro traces , both from Glastonbury. That's a trop storm trace.

Really fascinating! I had to look at my own graphs (KCTSTAFF4) and even though I was about 10 miles east of the center, you can see a similar dip, increase in wind and precip. Take a look though at this station in Somers which would have been due north (perhaps slightly east) of the one you posted and you can see a similar signature:

Here's one south of Somers in Ellington:

Might have been a Tor in Glastonbury like Suffolk LI. This is an incredible 30 min period.

Down on eastern li at my folks house. Got missed by the meat of the action today...some decent thunder and some wind...maybe G40 mph or so. Couplets went either to the west or east of me. Rainfall rate was obscene though. I havent felt this type of soup in awhile...77/74 at 11 pm here. Meanwhile...checking on my davis tipping bucket back in maine shows 2.36" for the day.

What happened today could actually spark a new research project...unless there are papers I'm unaware of it would be really nice to know and understand how these MCV's form and what it takes for them to enhance things like it did today.

Missed all the fun while driving to Salem, CT. Awful drive on I-295 & Rt 6. Torrential rains and lots of road flooding. I-395 was where it cleared up around Ginxs area. Few spotty showers from there on out. Was listening to WBZ on the way down when the TOR warning went up and saw the radar image while n Salem. That looked schweet. As Eleanor said, looks like close to 1.7" fell here, with gusts to 40mph. Not bad. It's steamy out there right now. I actually love nights like this after a t-storm rolls through.

Bob and gang,

Well, I did investigate the damage reports on Tremont Street (Route 140 but S of where it renames to Short St.). This is located north of downtown Taunton, just N of the Mulcahey Middle School (for those that know Taunton). I was half expecting the damage to be caused by lightning. BOY, was I wrong!!! I ended up running into TWO TV crews (Channels 5 and 25), turning into an impromptu storm survey. Several large healthy trees were uprooted behind one house, landing on four vehicles parked in the driveway behind this house. Several more trees were downed onto the house next door. Then, the next house up, noted large branches, actually a large section of the top of another tree was taken out. Winds also took down several more large branches, one hanging by a thread over the driveway of a house across the street. The owner of that house told me that her child's plastic playhouse was blown across the street, which I indeed saw outside that house. I was pretty amazed, considering I was about 5 miles SE of this damage, and saw only very heavy rainfall and a LOT of lightning strikes very close to my condo.

Unfortunately, I didn't bring my camera and it was getting dark by the time I arrived. I still got briefly interviewed by Channel 25 which aired this evening. I'm heading back first thing in the morning to get photos to document this event about 2 miles S of KBOX.

On a side note, our cats were really spooked. Unfortunately, we lost our beautiful 13 YO orange tabby, Charly, quite suddenly 2 weeks ago. Vet says he had acute anemia, likely due to bleeding caused by stomach cancer. While the hub and I are so sad about losing Charly, we have new member of the family, a long haired orange tabby/tiger kitten we named Ollie (4 months). Relating back to today, Ollie was really scared, especially the LOUD BOOM that hit very, very close to the condo. However, it was strange that the folks that got hit by the damage didn't notice much lightning.

I should be able to determine what caused the damage tomorrow when I return to work and get a good look at the radar data.

P.S. Almost forgot...looks like there were rainfall amounts around 3 inches in the same area as this wind damage, or close to it.

I just saw our very own Turtle get interviewed on the local fox news channel...she was doing damage survey in the taunton area :)

Just saw the Turtle bit on Fox 25 (hi Turtle!) and they also showed what lightning did in Foxboro. Holy crap. Destroyed a tree, travelled underground creating a 25 foot long, 2 foot wide, 1 foot deep trench, then destroying part of a deck

Hello Diane and Dave! I was hoping someone saw me out there! ;) The hub and I watched it together. Considering I had no makeup on, and a very old, hang around the house shirt on, didn't come out half bad.

Yes, Dave, that was VERY amazing what the lightning did in Foxboro!! Glad I wasn't there...oh my!

Surprised it's that warm there....73.5/73 in Westchester. I'm wondering if the humidity makes for an interesting day severe-wise tomorrow.

Not for nothing, but they may be another weak wave or triple point tomorrow over SE MA. These things are latent heat machines, so a warm body of water aids them. Sometimes in winter storms, you can see them way SE of BID or a place like that. Little meso low thingys...you see them on radar at least a few times a year.

Today looks conditional again, but we got some sun. Maybe western areas best chance for anything good? For now, best LLJ is near the cape which is why those storms are there and to the south.
