S band doesn't attenuate too badly. Of course anything will attenuate if's pouring on the radome and the beam is propagating the long way through a squall line or something, but in this case I don't think it's a big factor. BOX looks fairly similar and isn't looking through the stronger echoes in SW CT.

Thanks

They went off on June 1st when the TOR was issued for the earlier cell and Amherst was specified. Despite the false alarm the events of that day obviously left an impression of folks locally. Plus after VA Tech they've done a number of drills with the siren simulating a violent event on campus. So people are pretty much aware of what to do. But it's a college so it's especially hard to predict behavior. Heck in Oklahoma a tornado siren causes a stampede to the observation deck rather than duck and cover.

Where do you work?

It is possible that if you noticed it right as a strong band was on top of the radar it was suffering from radome attenuation, especially if the echoes from BOX were a lot brighter. By the time I checked it out the band had moved away from the radar. Most of the research radars nowadays forego the dome for that reason...

Margusity gone wild

Henry Margusity@Accu_Henry

Brookhaven Airport now gusting to 39 mph. Watch out for power outages in central Long Island up into CT.

No weather phenomenon is more intimidating than a 39mph wind gust. lol

We'll see how this batch holds together moving up from CT, but thus far, this has been el lamo (that's one of my three Spanish words, Phil).

.56 down. Enough rain to nullify the electric fence across the street so the cows can escape and too much to make me run out and chase them off the lawn. Cowpie's, ftl.

Cool, the caps I posted from just a little while ago show OKX not picking up the SECT SWRI returns like BOX.

Just tried to walk to my car, I was going to go down to Long Wharf and watch the harbor... But it was raining too heavily! I had an umbrella and I still got soaked before I got to the corner. So I gave up and went back to the apartment. I figured there wasn't much to see in all this rain anyway... Probably be a waterspout in the harbor now.

Very interesting event, amazingly tropical looking radar presentation.

Damn, look at those spin-ups in the sound now...

Radarman, Ryan, this is what I was talking about, different perspective

If you are talking about the clear spot NE of OKX that is "yellow" on BOX I don't think that's attenuation. More likely the lower beam height from OKX is showing less precip near the ground.

If it were attenuation, you'd expect even weaker echoes behind the clear spot (say in NW RI) from OKX's perspective and yet that area seems to agree pretty well.

Also, from OKX perspective the worst of the attenuation would be due north, and that also looks pretty similar to BOX.
