They went off on June 1st when the TOR was issued for the earlier cell and Amherst was specified. Despite the false alarm the events of that day obviously left an impression of folks locally. Plus after VA Tech they've done a number of drills with the siren simulating a violent event on campus. So people are pretty much aware of what to do. But it's a college so it's especially hard to predict behavior. Heck in Oklahoma a tornado siren causes a stampede to the observation deck rather than duck and cover. S band doesn't attenuate too badly. Of course anything will attenuate if's pouring on the radome and the beam is propagating the long way through a squall line or something, but in this case I don't think it's a big factor. As that band passed the radar site it seemed the beam was unable to see the storms to its NE. Box radar was picking them up, as the bands moved farther away the beam lit up again.
