I have never seen this before for a severe weather . Wow.

I think the government is much more aware now after Irene - the Halloween snowstorm and the derechio south of us a few weeks ago and doesn't want to be blamed for not warning folks - I don't recall any government warnings back in 98 before those 2 derechios hit on labor day

I am really hopefull that we get some supercells today out ahead of the main line because as nice as that line looks for tonight on the NAM it doesn't look like anything we haven't had before. I'm sure it will bring very gusty winds. But I would think the hail and tornado prob would be low with that type of bowing segment, and it would probably be over quickly.

It does not say a state of emergency will be issued at 1pm he states he will open the emergency operations center at 1 pm they are two very different things a state of emergency will be issued if there is widespread damage in a part of the state

I am a real weather newb, can someone please explain what a derecho is???

A Derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms. Generally, derechos are convection-induced and take on a bow echo form of squall line, forming in an area of wind divergence in the upper levels of the troposphere, within a region of low-level warm air advection and rich low-level moisture. They travel quickly in the direction of movement of their associated storms, similar to an outflow boundary (gust front), except that the wind is sustained and increases in strength behind the front, generally exceeding hurricane-force.
