michsnowfreak
Kudos to the observer...I think I would've been tempted to go with 0.9" I was actually wondering about that LOL. Was wondering if the observer wanted the futility stopped (slant sticker) or wanted it to keep going (lowballer), and this sounded like the perfect snowfall to go one way or the other. Or maybe the observer doesnt care either way and was just doing his job

michsnowfreak
Yep...Good catch. I assumed they would still have enough on the ground Sat morning and had not checked to make sure yet. With it being fluff...it could easily have settled to a T by the next day. Ive noticed over the years that the standard 7am depth (before 1950 it was 7pm) balances out because on a day when it starts snowing at, say, 10am and is white all day...the snow depth may very well be 0. But then you have your torch days where the 7am snow depth may be 2" and it is history by 11am through the rest of the day, but the days depth will be 2". It would only be fitting for Chicago this winter cant even balance that out with a few snowcover days lol. It just seems to be defying the laws of weather. I dont think Ive ever seen anything like it 1"+ snowcover days this winter through Jan 27 in the southern Lakes Madison- 45 Detroit- 24 Cleveland- 24 Milwaukee- 22 Columbus- 19 Indianapolis- 19 Chicago-

I imagine there have been a few seasons that have, especially that anemic year in the 20's when Chicago (well, not ORD, but still) only recorded 9.8 inches of snow. To clarify...are you asking if ORD has had a season without a 7+" snowstorm, or if ORD has had a season without a 7+" snow depth at some point? If the former...there have been a lot of seasons without a 7+" snowstorm. I believe ORD only averages one 6+" storm per season...so there have been a lot of years without one. It's fairly common. The latter is probably common too. Chicago only averages 37" of snow per season, and there are usually thaws in between the snowfalls that keep snow depth from getting out of hand. THE PREVIOUS RECORD HAD BEEN 0.92 INCHES IN 1947. THE CHICAGO RAINFALL TOTAL OF 1.33 INCHES ON THE 29TH WAS TIED FOR THE 12TH HIGHEST CALENDAR DAY TOTAL IN JANUARY ON RECORD.
