Reconstructed ENSO Modoki Index NEW As of: July 10th, 2012

This is a reconstruction of the EMI using the JAMSTEC's definition of the EMI: ENSO Modoki Index (EMI) [(165E-140W, 10S-10N) - (0.5 * (110W-70W, 15S-5N)) - (0.5 * (125E-145E, 10S-20N))] SST Anomalies, This index is a measure of ENSO Events In the Central Pacific Versus Traditional Events in the Eastern Pacific. Central based ENSO Events, and Traditional Eastern based ENSO share seasonal & global weather patterns, but they also have seperate pattern features. This differentiation between a Traditional ENSO event and a Central Based ENSO event will help in aiding seasonal predictive forecasting. Hence "Modoki", which means "Same, but different" in Japanese. This is simply a reconstruction of (Ashok et al. 2007; Weng et al. 2007; Ashok and Yamagata 2009) work dataset. I chose to reconstruct it because it never gets updated enough in time for some of my FORTRAN Climate models.

The Dataset is found in Tabular and Columnar format on the weblink above.

Here is a graph that shows the EMI over time (1970 to June 2012):
