The formerly approaching severe warned storm didn't really deliver at all. No wind, no hail, a paltry .10" before it rained itself out. It looked really nice on approach, however, with all the yellows, oranges and reds on RADAR. 2nd cluster behind it also vanished, and the trailing 3rd cluster is raplidly washing out. So continues the summer of 2012 at this location.

0.44" last night. I got the relative shaft with storms forming or coming woithin a mile of my house then falling apart/reforming. The rest of the county saw ~1.00" +

That's how it was in Durham later in the evening. Saw a wall of storms headed here, but they died out, only to reform just east of the city.

Wrapped up the weekend with 1 15-minute shower for just shy of .1 inches. Essentially, looks like the rain refused to slide north of a line from Charlotte to Faynam. Next few days will bring shortwave-driven showers, but I'd bet they're staying closer to the Va. state line. Looks like a busy week for the garden hose. Y'all take care!

A bit off topic but it does have to do with obs. I read this in an article. I have no idea if it is accurate but it did get my attention.

June broke or tied 3,215 high-temperature records across the United States. That followed the warmest May on record for the Northern Hemisphere -- the 327th consecutive month in which the temperature of the entire globe exceeded the 20th-century average, the odds of which occurring by simple chance were 3.7 x 10-99, a number considerably larger than the number of stars in the universe.

Were getting awfully close to tying a record high and hitting the century mark again today...97 at Hartsfield Int'l

Record - 100 set back in 1952.

EDIT: Up to 98 now with a heat index of 101. I wonder if the lower humidity (and dewpoint also to an extent, 60s instead of 70s) have anything to do with it?

327 consecutive months -- wow, I had no idea.

Locally, it's yet another scorcher here on the southeast coast of N.C. Checking data from the nearby UNCW weather station a little while ago I saw 97/75 for a heat index of 110F. Any other year I'd consider that outrageously hot but this year?

Another oddity this year is the sea breeze; or lack thereof. Time after time when I check the local close-up satellite I see the boundary pinned to coast fighting for every mile inland. And then when it finally does arrive (never a guarantee) it's so pathetic it only causes a slight shift in wind direction while simultaneously ramping up the humidity and heat index. It's just as likely to be worse with the sea breeze than without... totally ridiculous.

Update: The sea breeze is here. Temp dropped from 97F to 92F. Dew point rose from 75F to 79F. Wind (all rip-roaring 5mph of it) shifted from W to SW. Heat index dropped from 110F to 109F. Like I said... the sea breeze this year has been ridiculous and worthless.

I live just 25 miles from center Charlotte and we're just the same. We haven't had any decent rainfall in more than a week now.

Unreal shot! Nice.

Nothing today but strong winds and rainbows. If I lived a few miles southwest of here, I would have cashed in on rain for the last 3 days with only a 20% chance.

Daily failure update: some storms developed in the afternoon, headed ESE. Fell apart before getting to Durham and reformed literally 2 to 3 miles east of me and went on to give Wake County a drubbing. This is becoming a farce.

you guys should get together and have a rain dance... or something.

Most of the storms stayed just off to my SE a few miles lastnight and gave parts of the county 3 inches. I have no right to complain because MBY had seen rain just about everyday over the last week and I was well over 3 inch totals for the week.

Picked up a quick .25 on the tail end of storms that rolled from Raleigh to Faynam.. At least I didn't have to get up at 5:30 this morning and water the remnants of our tomatoes.

Looking forward to seeing what this potential squall line will bring this afternoon ... looks like a rollicking setup!

Beautiful shot! What did you use to shoot that?

Thanks! Used my Canon D60 SLR with i believe a 10-15 second exposure. Was pretty much a grab shot. Put my camera on my dashboard for a stable area while I was stopped in my driveway and pointed in the general direction of the storm and managed to get that picture!

Here is another, this one was from my iPhone 4S using an HDR app on the phone from a storm earlier that same day:

Amazing Temperature Report

Johnny Mercer Pier (Wrightsville Beach, NC) is reporting 94.6F ...... and that's over the ocean.

While I don't monitor that station (located at the end of the fishing pier) constantly, I must say I've never seen a temperature there above the 80s.

UPDATE: Now 95.2F over the ocean!

UPDATE: Now 96.1F over the ocean! Unreal!

Great lightening bolt photo. I always click to early, or two late. I'd love to catch one some day.

I've had .78 since the 5th, metered out in tenths and parts of tenths. Even the moles have trouble with severe drought. Need a tropical system real bad. I've had to go back to watering everyday, and I was just walking in the woods and it was startling how many trees are dead, or drying out. Obviously, a big hit every blue moon doesn't do anything for the drought conditions....but at least it is better than drought 24/7/365. T

I agree. We definitely need a drought-busting, slow-moving tropical storm to just sit over us for days. A widespread 5-10" would be very welcome to end this horrible drought Georgia is in. With the ground so dry, i'm worried we will see a repeat of what we saw in August 2007. Once we get to Mid-August, the number of afternoon storms tends to diminish pretty significantly. So from Mid-August to the end of October, we hardly get any rain unless we get a tropical system.

If it gets to 98.6 I'd bet a drunk fisherman is peeing on the sensor.

Yea, I might think so too... but that would be one heck of a stream, lol.

It's awfully hot here today, especially for 5pm. 98/71 106F @ KILM, 96/78 114F imby (UNCW), and 92-93F on the pier which reports every six minutes.

Just stepped outside and it's godawful out there. A breeze has picked up but it's blowing like a blast furnace. Not a soul out there either... no dog walkers, skateboarders, bike riders... all are hunkered down with their air conditioners, lol.

Cheers!
