Looks like someone fell asleep in 4th grade English class.

We'll see 2 months from now if it was a hot summer or not. Way too early to say. The past 2 weeks have been very warm, but the next 2 weeks could be normal to slightly below.

Nah, to this idiot, if we have 10 hot days it is a hot summer, in his world logic has no existence. Next week looks to be below normal. He may need a sweater. Lol

since June 29th NYC is averaging near 83.0...The last two years had a 30 day period averaging over 80.0...I use it as a barometer for judging the hottest periods...I think the 6/29 to 7/28 period will end up averaging 80.0 or better...

Hottest 30 day periods...

82.5 in 1980

81.9 in 1876

81.9 in 1999

81.8 in 2005

81.8 in 2010

81.6 in 1955

81.2 in 1993

81.1 in 1995

81.1 in 1988

81.0 in 1966

81.0 in 2011

80.9 in 1983

Coolest since 1930...

72.7 in 2000

74.4 in 1992

74.8 in 2004

74.9 in 1996

75.0 in 1960

75.0 in 1950

75.1 in 1956

75.5 in 1945

75.6 in 1962

75.7 in 1965

..............................................

1980 has the hottest period...surprisingly 1876 is in second place...2000's hottest 30 days was 72.7...Lowest on record...tied with 1888...average is 78.0 since 1930...

Normals

EWR: 86/68

NYC; 84/68

TTN: 85/65

Looks likw beginning Mon (7/9) we'll be near normal through about wed/thu before more southerly flow should keep mins higher and bring overall above normal. Areas could touch 90 by later in the week/next weekend.

That's near normal, but we'll be low to mid 80s most of this week.

http://forecast.weat...=&FcstType=text

Central NJ (away from shore) and Philly generally average upper 80's this time of year....NYC and western LI is closer to the mid 80's....and most of southern CT and the rest of LI average in the low 80's.

Of course areas in N. Jersey with some altitude are also cooler; places like High Point average closer to the mid 70's for highs this time of year...though they are @ 1803 feet a.s.l.

Eh, splitting hairs but a bit cooler than you said for CNJ/PHL. Philly's peak avg high is 87, Trenton 86, and 85 here in inland Monmouth County. Belmar peaks at 83.

This upcoming week will probably end up darn near normal.

Today's highs. Looka likw clouds arrived by 2 and lingered, and this probably kept us from reaching more widespread records.

PHL: 101

EWR: 102

TTN: 100

LGA: 97

ACY: 100

TEB: 96

NYC: 97

JFK: 99

ISP: 95

98 high here at 130. I'm sure we would've made 100 if not for the afternoon cloud debris. But the storms this evening made up for it.

Peaked at an unimpressive 91 F @ NWS Upton...as you mentioned...the cloudiness played a major role in keeping temps out of the triple digits away from the traditional hot spots.

As you approach DC / Baltimore the recent mean is up close to or just past 90 F; 40 years ago one did not hit those averages until you got to Richmond.

Seems like we've been experiencing an eternal summer around these parts. 2 years ago it felt like Vermont and now it feels like I'm in North Carolina.

I believe that. DC/BWI is an oven, and can often be much hotter than CNJ. They average about 38 90F days IIRC, similar to Raleigh NC. We average about 16-18 here, significant decrease in the BWI-NYC corridor.

Edit - 23 days in PHL, so the big decrease is from DCA/BWI to Philly.

Western N. Carolina has nice summers...never gets too hot because of the altitude...along with being one of the wettest spots in Eastern N. America. The Piedmont and coastal plain are very hot of course.

Of course the same is true in the opposite direction...coastal Massachusetts has mild summers and coastal Maine has downright cool ones as the Labrador Current works its magic.

Probably just the difference between having highs in the upper 80s and highs in the lower 90s. Not much different weather wise in reality but for the 90 degree arbitrary cutoff it makes a world of difference.
