HEAT WAVE 2012!

Wow

Recommended Posts

It's pretty obvious that temps won't be as insane in the Carolina Piedmont as compared to yesterday...thanks to those higher dewpoints. I think yesterday was the day for breaking records, today may be just more of an above average summer day. Makes you wonder if some of the weather service offices will begin to trim numbers for tomorrow...

My dew point is the same as yesterday if not a point or two lower. My temp today is 4 degrees lower at 2pm.

Should have been a bit more specific on location... a meso-low (which may be heat related) has developed over the Western Upstate and Northeast GA which has allowed surface winds to keep a southerly direction. Dewpoints here in the Western Carolinas are in the low-mid 60's today...10-12 degrees higher than yesterday.

BTW, its 98 now here along the escarpment...

TRI is at 99 as of 2pm which is a degree higher than yesterday at the same time.

I know Jackson, Ky is not really in our region but I wanted to highlight some cool parts of their lastest discussion:

THE NAM BUFFER FORECAST SOUNDING FOR THIS AFTERNOON IS SHOWING

MIXING UP TO ABOUT 20K FEET. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT IS ALMOST UNHEARD

OF HERE AND IS MORE LIKE WHAT IS SEEN IN THE DESERT SOUTHWEST. THE

POTENTIAL ENERGY...AS MEASURED BY THE CAPE...WAS SHOWING 5500

JOULES. THIS IS THE HIGHEST VALUES I HAVE EVER SEEN. IN THIS TYPE OF

SCENARIO...THE MISSING INGREDIENT TENDS TO BE A MECHANISM TO INITIATE

THE CONVECTION. LOOKING AT THE MODELS...THE BEST CHANCE FOR

INITIATION APPEARS TO BE LATER IN THE EVENING AROUND 10 OR 11 PM...HOWEVER

IT IS STILL POSSIBLE FOR SOMETHING TO FORM EARLIER. ONCE THE OUTFLOW

BOUNDARIES FORM...IT TENDS TO BE LIKE PUTTING FIRE TO GASOLINE.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PEACHTREE CITY GA

206 PM EDT SAT JUN 30 2012

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 100 PM EDT SAT JUN 30 2012/

..ALL TIME STATION AND STATE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE RECORDS IN DANGER

OF FALLING TODAY...

UPDATE...

STILL APPEARS THAT WE ARE ON TRACK FOR ANOTHER RECORD BREAKING

DAY. NORTH AND NORTHEAST WINDS HAVE DELAYED MIXING AND DRYING...

ALSO LESS DOWNSLOPE. WE EVEN HAD A FEW PLACES IN NE GA RUNNING

COOLER THAN THIS TIME YESTERDAY. DESPITE THIS...MORNING SOUNDING

HAD 26C AT 850MB WHICH IS CERTAINLY WARMER THAN YESTERDAY.

DEWPOINTS ALSO RUNNING HIGHER THAN THIS TIME YESTERDAY. NE GA

LATEST 5MIN ATL OBS IS 99/63. MILLEDGEVILLE AWOS 102/63. HAVE

BUMPED TEMPS UP A TAD OVER WRN GA AND RAISED DEWPOINTS A TAD. WITH

THIS COMBINATION AND COLLABORATION WITH SURROUNDING OFFICES...WENT

AHEAD AND PUT ALL OF NW CWA IN ADVISORY INCLUDING MOUNTAIN ZONES.

REST OF FCST LOOKS GOOD. WILL CONTINUE TO TRACK TRENDS AND UPDATE

RECORD REPORTS AS NEEDED.

FYI...ALL TIME TEMPERATURE RECORD OF 112 FOR GEORGIA COULD BE

THREATENED TODAY. IT OCCURRED AT THE NWS COOPERATIVE STATION IN

GREENVILLE ON AUG 20 1983. IF THIS RECORD WAS TIED OR EXCEEDED WE

WOULD MARK IT AS UNOFFICIAL UNTIL THE DATA IS QCD AND CERTIFIED BY

NCDC.

OK BTW it is 97.4 here now away from the escarpment. I just checked my station data. At the time of my 102.3 high temp yesterday my dewpoint was 71.7. Today the sky isn't as blue. Its still sunny but a bit hazier.

Well, RDU went up 4 degrees in the last hour to 104. I have to say that I'm surprised by that. Yesterday, I think we were 103 at the 3 pm observation, but I don't remember for sure. Can we get another 2 degrees?

Just checked. RDU was at 104o at the 3:00 ob yesterday.

Gotcha. I couldn't remember if it was 3 or 4. Thanks! Still have enough time to pick up a couple more degrees, but it's going to be tough. Would be nice to see the all time record fall. I mean if you're gonna be this miserable, you might as well have something to show for it. :)

103F at Wilmington, NC crushes old record of 100F before sea breeze reaches airport. 3pm temp plunged to 94F, dp rose to 77F, HX fell slightly to 109F.

103F is one degree short of matching our all-time record high.

Sea breeze is pinned tightly to the surface with cloud-free westerly winds aloft.
