It Really Was a Heat Wave II (unless it wasn't, in which case it was weak sauce)- - Obs and Disco Late June/Early July 2012

I think there is a more famous Ice Glen in Stockbridge near Bear Town State Forest. I remeber going there a few years ago and there was ice cold wind blowing out of the caves on an 80 degree day.

There is indeed an Ice Glen in Stockbridge. I renovated a big old mansion for some Saudis there about 10 yrs ago on Ice Glen Rd. Cool place, literally.

There is a place just over the border in NY that you can find snow at the bottom of a hole in July

Thats the Berkshire Snow Hole. I visited that place last year on June 6th with my son. There was not a lot of snow/ice last year after a snowy winter, so this year's offerings are probably kind of lack-luster.

The old timers here call this "Ice Glen". We're always +/- 1 or 2 degrees of the others. The old Ashfield site and here were almost identical in temps (very similar terrain), right now Shaw Pond seems to be pretty close though they are a bit farther south. I chose this spot in large part due to the snowpack retention. We hold the snow.

There's a place like that close to where I live, actually. The Fruitland Museum is situated up on a mere 500 foot el, and it is pretty heavily wooded up there. I cut over that ridge line in route to work and back, and no matter, it's always 7F cooler on that 500' el than it is surrounding. It's like a heat sink in central Middlesex Co.

There is a cave above Stowe's gondola that can hold snow all summer. One of our locals has a tradition of going up there with garbage bags and filling them with snow, only to bring it back down and build a 4th of July snowman at the base of the gondola. The tourists and locals love it. This year recon shows there is still snow in the cave as of a couple days ago but it will be hard to get to...not sure if the 4th of July snowman will take place.

Last year on July 4th there was still natural snow lurking on Mansfield...this is a tire-sized chunk that was left from a massive winter drift last 4th at 3500ft. This drift at the top of the gondola was probably 25 feet deep to start burying all these trees, and melted down to this small patch.

What a pyrotechnic display on the beach last night. I've never seen anything like it....like we stormed the beacj at Normandy. How people get Pops style fireworks is beyond me.

Viet****ingnam. and we get to do it all over again tonight.......here comes the sizzle

69/63, looks like another awesome day withou any uncomfortable heat. The 7-day forecast looks awesome as well and features steadily declining high temps. We'll be 1/2 way through the month of July without any ugly heat before you know it. Hopefully we head into a cool and rainy period here mid-month. My buddy from AK is coming down for a month or two and I don't want him to suffer in any high temps. Sure glad I didn't predict a hot summer. BBBBBBust!!!!

There are some old copper mines here in Corinth at around 1600-1900'. I doubt there's any snow or ice in them now but my wife rides her mountain bike around there some and has reported snow/ice inside the mine openings certainly into June after a cold and/or snowy winter. And of course the same cold blasts of air coming out of them...

The last time I was in AK I was astonished to see how large a fireworks shell you could buy. Expensive but still if you want them you can legally buy them. When My friend clears land he makes huge slash piles. Once they have seasoned and snow is on the ground he dowses them with gas (leaving a gallon or so in an old bucket). Then from a safe distance we launch flaming balls from a Roman candle into the pile. KABOOOOM. Lots of fun when you have a buzz on.lol

It's little humid and icky today....looking at mid 80's probably. Maybe not comfortable, but child's play compared to the heatwave west and south of us. Last night's showered missed east/north...barely measurable here.

58 days until Met. Autumn!

Losing 51 seconds of daylight today......

By July 15 we lose -> 1:30 per day, July 31 -> 2:10 per day, August 15 -> 2:30, August 31 -> 2:45

So great to have the theme of Summer be under performing heat. Just day after day of pleasant, comfortable weather.

I love that sort of stuff...and I have no doubt there are several other unknown locations where snow fills in the rocks and lasts into summer. I'm thinking like the backside of the Worcester Range at like 3-3.5K feet and no people for miles and miles. So many possible hiding spots for the white stuff.

Very breezy again. I was just having a cup of coffee on the screen porch and it's very comfortable. Caught a little rain last night. We've been lucky to get some rain from t-storms when others have been dry. I've noticed the birds have startedjust a bit later in the morning. I love how the cold slowly creeps back.

Looks nice next week. Who said death trough? Maybe the same who said death ridge and days of 90+ this week.

Everyone was giddy about yesterdays 12z run, until the ens said ummmmmmmmmmmm no way. GFS looks warm. 90s and sun today a perfect 4th of July!

Off to the beach

God Bless America

Viva la Summer

All models have a cool down. It's not 60s obviously, but probably 75-85 stuff for most of the week and 50s-60s for lows. Low humidity. It will turn warmer and possibly wetter by the following weekend.
