Late June/Early July Extreme Heat Episode

LOT still going with the NAM for FROPA timing. If the timing they mention works out, 100+ should be easy.

//DISCUSSION...UPDATED 06Z...

AT 05Z COLD FRONT EXTENDS FROM FAR NORTHERN GEORGIAN BAY AND THE

NORTH CHANNEL OF LAKE HURON WEST ACROSS THE EASTERN U.P. OF MI

...WEST-SOUTHWEST ACROSS NORTHWEST WI AND THEN SOUTHWEST ACROSS

SOUTHERN MN...FAR NORTHWEST IA AND NORTHEAST NE. SURFACE WINDS

WOULD SUGGEST A FURTHER SOUTHWARD PLACEMENT OF THE BOUNDARY ACROSS

THE UPPER GREAT LAKES AND THE UPPER MIDWEST BUT THE LEADING WIND

SHIFT TO NORTHERLY WINDS IS DUE TO THUNDERSTORM OUTFLOWS RATHER

THAN THE COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE.

WHILE MODEL GRAPHICAL AND NUMERICAL OUTPUT SHOW SURFACE WIND

VEERING TO OUT OF THE NORTHWEST LATER THIS MORNING THE TRUE COLD

FRONT LOOKS TO BE DELINEATED BY THE FURTHER VEERING TO NORTH AND

NORTHEAST PROGGED TO OCCUR ACROSS NORTHERN IL DURING THE

AFTERNOON. WHILE OUTFLOWS OFTEN ENCOURAGE COLD FRONTAL MOVEMENT

DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR PREFER THE SLOWER MOVEMENT AND LATER

TIME OF PASSAGE AS DEPICTED BY THE LATEST RUN OF THE NAM

CONSIDERING THE BACKING AND INCREASING LOW LEVEL WINDS BEING

DETECTED BY 88D AND TERMINAL DOPPLERS AT QUAD CITIES AND DSM

AREA. USING THE NAM FOR TIMING THE FRONT PASSES BOTH ORD AND MDW

AT 20-21Z AS THE FRONT MOVES QUICKER SOUTHWARD OVER LAKE MI DUE

TO LESS SURFACE FRICTION.

taking under 100 for chicago.

Gatorade and beer to soon be buried in ice for the softball tourney by day and then heavy partying at summerfest by night. Can't wait to get out back in to normal weather and civilization..feels like I've been in prison for 3 yrs not just holed up for 3 days. Have a great weekend all.

snowlord, the last 80 degree low in Indianapolis occurred on August 23, 1936.

To expand on this a little, Indianapolis reeled off five consecutive 80º+ minimum temperatures (it was close to six with a 79º on 7/9) in July 1936. The official site was downtown in 1936.

7/10/1936: 82º

7/11/1936: 80º

7/12/1936: 81º

7/13/1936: 81º

7/14/1936: 81º

Then had a four out of five streak in August 1936.

8/19/1936: 82º

8/20/1936: 74º

8/21/1936: 80º

8/22/1936: 81º

8/23/1936: 80º

With hourly temps of 81º at 6:00AM and 82º at 7:00AM...barring a two degree intrahour bump down, and something happening this evening/tonight, looks like today will be the first 80º minimum temperature at the airport (as Hoosier mentioned).

Minimum temps for this morning.

IND: 81º (daily record: 84º in 1874)

ORD: 81º (daily record: 78º in 1876)

MDW: 81º

Of course, ORD may not hold onto this record depending on what happens later today (hourly weather graph from LOT has 75º at 10PM for ORD).

no 100 today for chicago.. euro ftw..nam ftl. 70 out :snowing:

I've noticed that BowMe has some prejudicial tendencies regarding the great state of Illanoy. I'm going with 100° at ORD FTW because of this:

"WHILE MODEL GRAPHICAL AND NUMERICAL OUTPUT SHOW SURFACE WIND

VEERING TO OUT OF THE NORTHWEST LATER THIS MORNING THE TRUE COLD

FRONT LOOKS TO BE DELINEATED BY THE FURTHER VEERING TO NORTH AND

NORTHEAST PROGGED TO OCCUR ACROSS NORTHERN IL DURING THE

DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR PREFER THE SLOWER MOVEMENT AND LATER

TIME OF PASSAGE AS DEPICTED BY THE LATEST RUN OF THE NAM

CONSIDERING THE BACKING AND INCREASING LOW LEVEL WINDS"

My friend just texted me asking if it's going to hit 107º here today...because that's what he said TWC is forecasting. Sigh. I told him (and several times in the past) to stop paying attention to TWC. :axe:

Reminds of the 18-24" call for Detroit the morning of GDB.

Detroit only got down to 80*F last night, unless it fell lower during an intra-hour observation.

DETROIT CITY SUNNY 85 73 67 W7 29.89S HX 91

6HR MIN TEMP: 81; 6HR MAX TEMP: 85

DETROIT MOSUNNY 84 73 69 SW6 29.91R HX 90

6HR MIN TEMP: 78; 6HR MAX TEMP: 84;

Have a good feeling IND is breaking the all time record today, or at minimum tying it. To repeat, 106 is the number.

Well I'm all in for breaking it and not seeing this temp ever again in my lifetime hopefully..

I think the only issue could be is some clouds..

IND FB post:

We have increased the forecast high temp for Indy today to 107. This would break our all-time high temp.

OK FOLKS...HERE IT IS. ALL TIME RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR

INDIANAPOLIS IS NOW FORECASTED FOR THIS AFTERNOON. 107. HERE IS

WHY.

THE MORNING LOW...81 DEGREES IN INDIANAPOLIS...WAS THE WARMEST

START TO A DAY SINCE AUGUST 1936. 500MB HEIGHTS CONTINUE TO SHOW HIGH

PRESSURE STRETCHING ACROSS IA...NORTHERN IL AND INDIANA AND WATER

VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS STRONG SUBSIDENCE CONTINUING ACROSS THIS AREA.

12Z 850 MB ANALYSIS SHOWS AN AREA OF 24C+ AIR OVER NORTHERN

INDIANA AND NORTHERN ILLINOIS POISED TO PUSH SOUTH INTO CENTRAL

INDIANA THIS AFTERNOON. A FEW CU...LIKE YESTERDAY SHOULD BE

EXPECTED LATE THIS AFTERNOON...BUT STILL THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF

SUN. FURTHERMORE THE HEAT CONTINUES TO BUILD ACROSS THE AREA...AS

WE CONTINUE TO BE 2-3 DEGREES AHEAD OF YESTERDAY/S PACE. THUS WE

SHOULD BE ABLE TO EXCEED YESTERDAYS HIGHS BY 1-2 DEGREES WITH FULL

SUN...WARM AIR ADVECTION AND BUILDING HEAT.
