SACRUS
Great thread, I remember a similar thread from the old eastern board where we were discussing 2000's monthly temps. For those who likes snow and warmth, you cant complain abou the last few years (except last winter of course!). I agree with Iso I think we will settle Oct on the cooler side, at first i thought wed continue warm but I am growing increasingly convinced we will have a period of much below normal to tip the scale for the enitre month negative. That period is likely the 9th - 19th.

But how do you explain Central Park? Manhattan and surrounding areas have been built up for 100 years. Manhattan itself even longer, especially where they were taking the measurements back then. Don't forget these averages are also based on the 1981-2010 average. Even when compared to the warmest 30 year climatological set we are above average. That's pathetic and there's no denying the incredible stretch of warmth we've been in.

Yep, there's definitely no denying that North America has seen a historic stretch of warmth from 2010-2012. In all likelihood, the past two years were a strong aberration from normal, and we're unlikely to continue w/ this level of warmth in future years. Im not arguing that it hasnt been warm...not at all, in fact its been warm as hell the past few years. Manhattan is part of a greater metropolitan area that has been built up significantly in the past 100 years. The island itself may have already been paved over since then, but as time went on, NNJ, LI, Westchester all urbanized and grew as well. You cant honestly tell me that UHI has not grown in the past 100 years.... How many times have you and AG3 commented that LGA is 5+ degrees warmer than both of you when you live so close by? We've heard it often, especially when it comes to lows. All im saying is why not show both UHI stations and non-UHI stations?

You see the same trends relative to the means at rural locations also. Just look at the NCDC supplemental that also has rural locations to see the record warmth recently at those locations just like the more urban areas. Relative to the means, the greatest warming recently has occurred in Arctic which is undeveloped.

Guest Pamela
At Central Park, December 2012 was 1.8 F cooler than December 2011. June, July, & September have gotten cooler each year over the past 3 years; April is 0.1 degrees from being in that group. I think we are headed in the proper direction... <Half seriously>
