mappy
Yup, especially with how close I was. But it's still a great lightning show here, the best I've seen in a while Hell of a light show

Bob Chill
Pretty bad one here but July 09 was worse. Power gone for a while i assume. No real damage other than tree clutter. Generator kicking with cold fridge, fans, and plasma tv so I got a chance to test everything. Now that I know it works....can I have my power and ac back please? Roger Smith
This all sounds almost if not equal to the infamous July 15th 1995 early morning derecho event that hit Ontario, New York state and New England. I was in that one (northeast of Toronto) and had very similar observations, trees half bent over, estimated 80 mph gusts, continuous thunder and lightning for 20-30 mins and a nearby tornado. It also came after a record hot day (99 F at my location on 7-14-95). But as bad as this storm today may have been, the guidance is suggesting another very severe event late Saturday afternoon and evening (the timetable looks 2-3h faster and perhaps more, so it could hit at the peak of the late afternoon heating). Track on RGEM would be a touch north of the strongest portion of tonight's storm, a bit closer to the PA border. Quite something to have all-time record highs and then a massive storm on the same day, but now you've missed out on the record high min which is good. eurojosh
My wife made fun of me when I checked the weather and plugged my blackberry in to charge at nine pm. I'm having the last laugh - but am guessing it won't be so funny when it's back up to 100 tomorrow and still no power... Is this seriously happening again tomorrow? Odds have got to be against a repeat...?

WVclimo
I can see the light pollution from a few blocks away reflecting off the clouds so that it is bright enough to walk around outside w/o a flashlight. we contemplated camping at our new house but didn't want to navigate back roads in the dark with trees and wires down, plus it looks like the power there is out anyway. Sorry you are out of power. Hope it comes back overnight. My hours-old transformer held up. I had a 46 mph gust and I'm over 0.50' of rain, but it looked much more severe down your way. DrOldSchool
Happen to be visiting my folks between New Market and Mt. Airy MD. Had the brightest and loudest crack of lightning I've seen/heard. Power flickered afterwards but it knocked out the water pump, dads desktop, cable modem, router, cable tv, and some window candle bulbs. Scary stuff. Symblized
Just drove from Columbia to Baltimore. Police had shut down Governor Warfield Pkwy in Columbia in the southern direction because of what I assumed to be trees down. The northern route had some huge branches in the road that we had to slowly drive around to avoid. Branches were down all over the place on any road except for I-95 and MD-175. Even when we got to Baltimore, a construction fence was across the road, branches were down in our alley, and the rear neighbors' picnic table umbrella had uprooted from its moorings and flown into the next home's parking pad. All in a decent summer's storm.
TradeWinds
Looks like I got the screw zone (Jackpot). 50-60mph here, kept power but still saw some wind. We got good and needed rains, an awesome electric show, and no real damage. Sounds like a win to me!

eurojosh
Pepco site says 400k without power; if I'm reading their site right, that's moco alone. No indication yet of when power comes back. Here's a thought: if no power for 24 hours in many locations, and 100 degree heat, how many elderly are at risk of heat stroke? Hope someone is beginning to think about this. Hoosier
Hopefully they extend this farther east but this is pretty cool One of the things that stands out to me is how many official reporting sites gusted over 70 mph today from the Midwest to the Mid Atlantic. cmichweather
Southern portion of the derecho is pretty meh, I'd say 45 max well out ahead of the precipitation. Impressive reports for those to the north. Hopefully the power comes back quickly, if not enjoy a couple of flicks and get used to the mall. Midwest. Got pretty much the entire state of WV and VA too, except for some sparsly populated counties in the SW corner. Impressive coverage and a similar path to the right turn Derecho in 1995, except it didn't make a strong right turn. Southern portion of the derecho is pretty meh, I'd say 45 max well out ahead of the precipitation. Impressive reports for those to the north. Hopefully the power comes back quickly, if not enjoy a couple of flicks and get used to the mall. Sothern portion looks to get hit tomorrow. Th'll be some time to get Cape into SERN VA before the MCS gets thier. It might arrive too early in DC.

stormitecture
Ahhhh...that felt Goooooood! 2.5"+ hail (yes, I have a picture...not sure how to move it in the cloud from my iphone to my iPad) High winds (I can say that reports of winds over 70mph in the Damascus area is not out of the question Obstacle course type driving was in deed a challenge. But having a lifted Jeep proved it's worth today! Some cg lightning shots to boot...though will have to process them when the power is back on. A good day!
