Severe Threat in Minnesota

Recommended Posts

Ended up being a junk tor threat...and now a major life threatening flash flood event. Duluth is a gorgeous area...part home to me. Sad to see potentially catastrophic flooding up there.

"THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. LIVES MAY BE LOST IF

PEOPLE DO NOT HEED THIS WARNING.

DULUTH POLICE ARE ADVISING AGAINST TRAVEL IN THE ENTIRE CITY OF

DULUTH. RAINFALL OF MORE THAN 6 INCHES IN SPOTS WAS NOTED FROM THE

DULUTH AREA AND ALONG HIGHWAY 61 OF THE NORTH SHORE. VARIOUS MEDIA

OUTLETS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE REPORTING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN THE

CITY OF DULUTH...WITH ROADS STARTING TO COLLAPSE ALONG THE HILLSIDE

OF DULUTH. THIS APPEARS TO BE A FLOOD REMINISCENT OF THE FLOOD OF

1972 AND ONE THAT SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. THERE HAVE BEEN

REPORTS IN THE DULUTH NEWS TRIBUNE ONLINE LIVE BLOG OF PEOPLE BEING

RESCUED FROM THEIR BASEMENT APARTMENTS...FALLING INTO SINKHOLES OF

COLLAPSED ROADS AND RIVERS AND STREAMS OVERTAKING ROADWAYS.

WE CANNOT STRESS WHAT A MAJOR THREAT THIS IS FOR THE CITY OF DULUTH

AND ALONG THE NORTH SHORE. AGING INFRASTRUCTURE WILL ALSO PLAY A

PART IN THE FLOOD THREAT...ESPECIALLY ON THE HILLSIDE. HIGHWAY 61

REMAINS CLOSED IN SPOTS. JUST BECAUSE YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO TRAVEL TO

A DESTINATION NOW...DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL MAKE IT IN ONE TO TWO

HOURS. THIS IS HOW FAST THIS SITUATION MAY DETERIORATE AS MORE

RAINFALL MOVES IN FROM THE WEST. THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR SEVERAL

MORE INCHES OF RAIN THIS MORNING AND THE UTILITY SYSTEM AND THE

SATURATED GROUND CANNOT TAKE MUCH MORE RAIN."

That is really worrisome to read that, Duluth is a very nice city. I would be concerned about rock/mudslides too considering most of the city is on the bluffs of Lake Superior.

A very nice city, I love it. The terrain is very sharp there...very conducive to flash flooding. Sounds bad out there.

The closure of highway 61 is a huge deal too because as you know that is basically the only road through the Arrowhead. That picture reminds me of the flash flooding on I-96 during one severe weather event locally.

Is your place ok?

Yeah everything is alright. Thanks for asking. Lots of damage though around Duluth with sink holes and a kid even fell in one. He is luckily OK though. Pretty memorable event and it looks like the front has still gotta get through here yet so maybe some more storms to come.

Those pictures are incredible. For those who have not been to Duluth, the hillsides are extremely steep...most of the roads on those hills that drop down into the city are so steep they are heated during winter so cars don't slide down the roads in wintry weather.

No problem...glad everything is fine at your place.

Seeing it yourself, how bad is it? Is this going to take years to fix, or is it just localized damage?

I don't think it will take years. Of course I haven't seen everything yet but it will take a while that is for sure.
