Tornado in Venice

Wow, thanks for posting. Are tornadoes rare for Venice, Matteo?

Not that much.

Back in 1970 (september 11th ...) a Tornado did 34 casualties in the city, and also from the past years there are various photos of tornadoes in the Venice's area.

I'm only speculating here, but I would imagine that the Mediterranean marine boundary layer influence combined with nocturnal land-breeze boundaries that develop between Italy and Croatia would make waterspouts (occasionally making landfall) a not-too-rare occurrence. However, based upon the storm structure / well defined wall cloud, I would suspect that this was a much less common supercellular tornado (as the one in 1970 most likely was).

Venice was in the European equivalent of a slight risk (forecasts made by ESTOFEX), and only about 200 km west of a moderate risk at the time. Pretty detailed convective outlook:
