JamieOber
Wow, thanks for posting. Are tornadoes rare for Venice, Matteo?
Matthew-Northern Italy
Not that much. Back in 1970 (september 11th ...) a Tornado did 34 casualties in the city, and also from the past years there are various photos of tornadoes in the Venice's area. HurricaneJosh
A tornado looks so strange and out-of-place in these architecturally-ornate parts of Europe. Cool videos.
icebreaker5221
Wow, thanks for posting. Are tornadoes rare for Venice, Matteo? Not that much. Back in 1970 (september 11th ...) a Tornado did 34 casualties in the city, and also from the past years there are various photos of tornadoes in the Venice's area. I'm only speculating here, but I would imagine that the Mediterranean marine boundary layer influence combined with nocturnal land-breeze boundaries that develop between Italy and Croatia would make waterspouts (occasionally making landfall) a not-too-rare occurrence. However, based upon the storm structure / well defined wall cloud, I would suspect that this was a much less common supercellular tornado (as the one in 1970 most likely was). icebreaker5221
By the way, the tornado occurred at 9:05 UTC http://www.essl.org/cgi-bin/eswd/eswd.cgi Venice was in the European equivalent of a slight risk (forecasts made by ESTOFEX), and only about 200 km west of a moderate risk at the time. Pretty detailed convective outlook: http://www.estofex.org/cgi-bin/polygon/showforecast.cgi?text=yes&fcstfile=2012061306_201206112317_2_stormforecast.xml
