tacoman25
I can see some smoke and haze out there. There is a faint smell of smoke. The satellite shows that it came in from Wyoming or Idaho. Laramie and Cheyenne report haze. Looks like we will have some pleasant temperatures in the near future. Haze is a lot worse here today. Pretty much blocking out the sun. Chinook
I thought the sky just looked really weird the last Tuesday and yesterday. Even today, right now, the blue sky looks a little weird, but not too much. We had clouds today and then two minor rain showers, with a few sprinkles. It seems like fall is in the air. Not exactly sure our precise flight path, but there was lots of smoke visible for about half of the flight.
TheWeatherPimp
Just arrived in Idaho yesterday (Twin Falls). Visibilities out here are generally 2-4 miles due to the smoke from the wildfires to our North and Southeast. Looks like we could see another critical fire weather day tomorrow with the possibility for thunderstorms and gusty outflow winds.

mayjawintastawm
Nice cool mornings, low 50s with a bit lower in the gullies. Haze/smoke aloft is getting annoying but the air quality is decent. Still too dry and boring. Yawn.
Mercurial
20 years ago yesterday, an August snowstorm pummeled Montana, sending snow levels all the way down to the valley floors. Helena picked up 6 inches; Great Falls had 8. I was in Anaconda, MT at the time and we had 3-4 inches.
mayjawintastawm
Broken record feels like a broken record.... looks like we're in for another month for the books, around #5 warmest and #5 driest August in DEN. Don't know what the #1 warmest JJA is but I'm sure we'll get that one too.
Chinook
Fort Collins got some sprinkles yesterday and the day before. We also had a high of 95 on both days. Tuesday may have tied a record. mayjawintastawm
Good to have you. Throw some humidity our way! Now that September is almost here, we can enter serious wishcasting mode. Chinook
We have some thicker smoke here today. I could smell it this morning. Our visibility is about 4-5 miles. Dang western wildfires. I see BJC is reporting haze and smoke also.

In fact, check out the stats for this summer: DEN 90+: 64 100+: 13 Stapleton 90+: 57 100+: 5 And who knows how many records* set at DEN that wouldn't have been records at Stapleton. TheWeatherPimp
Well two weeks here and I've had two severe weather events already (very rare for here). Did one and a half hours of live wall to wall tornado warning coverage tonight and we had 2 confirmed tornado touchdowns. Been pretty crazy. Chinook
And who knows how many records* set at DEN that wouldn't have been records at Stapleton. Tacoman25, How do you know what the observations from Stapleton are? There isn't any airport there today, right? Is there a mesonet station? Something more? TheWeatherPimp, Wow! Tornadoes in Idaho. I thought that place was all mountains.
RIC Airport
Tacoman25, How do you know what the observations from Stapleton are? There isn't any airport there today, right? Is there a mesonet station? Something more? COOP Station # 052220 looked to have had continuous observations until June 30, 2012. I haven't look much on this, but I can't seem to find evidence for observations at this site since then.
tacoman25
COOP Station # 052220 looked to have had continuous observations until June 30, 2012. I haven't look much on this, but I can't seem to find evidence for observations at this site since then. I've linked to it before: http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:80022.1.99999 UDFCD Stapleton. If you look at reliable stations around the metro area, those further east like DEN always have warmer highs in the summer. It makes perfect sense then that DEN, which is 12 miles away from the previous airport and 19 miles from downtown, would run hotter in the summer than previous official Denver stations, which were downtown and then in Stapleton. http://www.examiner.com/article/do-denver-weather-and-climate-records-have-an-asterisk-attached http://www.examiner.com/article/data-shows-denver-weather-records-skewed-by-move-to-dia The second article makes the comparison to Buckely AFB, but UDFCD Stapleton is actually closer to where the old Stapleton airport was. Either way, it's clear that those 12 miles make a significant difference, and that records set at DEN really need an asterisk much of the time. The linked article above just compares the years 2001-2008, but I have noticed that every summer since, DEN tends to have highs most days anywhere from 1-3 degrees warmer than most of the metro area further west. mayjawintastawm
Nice links, with good insights. Looks like there were three articles in the series- do you have a link to the third one? Still darn hot, I don't care where your station is, I'm sick and tired of 95 (or 93, or 92, or whatever) with no rain!!

Still darn hot, I don't care where your station is, I'm sick and tired of 95 (or 93, or 92, or whatever) with no rain!! I agree, way too many 95+ days this summer no matter how you slice it! I am fine with the normal Front Range summer weather (a week or so of 90-95, followed by a few days in the 80s), but once it gets above 95, my tolerance goes way down. And there is no doubt there were way more really hot days this summer than any other I've been here (or probably in Denver/Boulder history). I have a feeling that with the change in ENSO we have seen over the past month, we will have some substantial pattern changes coming up soon. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see a big storm or two late this month/early October.

Trent
I'm in Denver for a conference. I just can't believe how dry it is. This afternoon it was 92 with a dewpoint of 14 for an rh of 5%. Is it typical to have daytime dewpoints in the lower teens here?

Is it typical to have daytime dewpoints in the lower teens here? Whenever we have downsloping winds, yes. It's a pretty arid climate. However, this spring/summer has been much drier than most. A combination of persistent weather patterns and the ongoing drought in the central plains has meant very few moist airmasses around here, unfortunately. Chinook
Fort Collins was 2.4 degrees above normal, making the 5th hottest August. We had 0.03" of rain. mayjawintastawm
The NWs digital forecast is calling for around 0.35-0.4 inch of rain at DEN tonight through Thursday. That would be nice. Last time we had much over 0.1 was in early July!! Probably first snow of the season on the western skyline too. It's always fun to look up there at sunrise and do a double-take around this week... "is that what it looks like?"
tacoman25
Yup, looks like a nice rain event tonight/tomorrow, and probably a 25+ degree drop in temps from today. Thursday morning should be quite crisp, too, provided things clear out. And then good chance of more fall-like weather next Mon/Tue.
