It was actually a reality. It was -15 on December 9 2009. I actually like it when it's 90 degrees and dry vs. -15 degrees.

I remember those cold temps too. It was -13 in Denver, ice on the inside of my old picture window. Even though it feels good thinking about those cold temps, things can still be accomplished outside today, but not when it's -13.

Actually you can accomplish a lot... in fact you need to in order to stay warm! :0 Who needs fingers anyway?

Last time it was -15 at my place (Feb 2011) I went for a run. It was good after the first half mile, though my feet felt a bit wooden till the last few minutes. Now if it's after 10 AM I can't run till sunset- too dang hot.

BTW if my math is correct DEN needs to average only +1 or warmer through the end of the month to set a new all time high monthly record.

11 out of 12 days above 90.

It looks like the models show somewhat higher chances of precipitation/thunder the next two days.

It doesn't look like there is a large area of 50 dew points right now though. There are 50 dew points in western Colorado, which is a little promising.

Hey guys.. Not sure if you guys know but a climber was found dead after he went missing during his descent from North Maroon Peak on Thursday. He happened to be a good friend and coworker of mine here in NY. Was just curious if you guys could tell me what the weather was like in that area around 3pm.. Thank you much appreciated..

All of Larimer and Boulder counties got some rain last night. It was raining at midnight at my place. It was windy, but not very rainy.

I normally say that the monsoon for Colorado is July 25 to August 10. In my mind, the period of greatest rains is not too well defined. NWS Denver/Boulder wrote a presentation called El Nino, The Monsoon, Recent Weather and Drought Conditions, and the Aug-Oct 2012 Outlook for Colorado which got me to thinking about the monsoon.

Sorry to hear that you lost a friend.

Assuming you mean 3pm mountain time (21Z), here was the radar at that time on Thu. Maroon Peak is just southwest of Aspen (shows up as ASE on the map). You can see there was some convection in the area at that time. Probably some rain, wind and lightning.

wow, weird. There wasn't even much bad thunderstorm activity yesterday. We are about 40 miles east of Evans (downstream, yesterrday) and there was a dying thunderstorm with a little mammatus at the time and very little lightning. No supercell for sure. Maybe it was one of those "cold core funnels" you get sometimes.

BTW, look at that cell east of Sterling right now... looks like it's turning right, hail is getting bigger, and developing a couplet on radar. no TOR warning yet but...wouldn't want to have a farm there right now.

We have had two straight days of light rain. Looks like there has been lots of activity over the plains on both days. We even have a mesoscale discussion for eastern Colorado today.

Yesterday I hiked at Cameron Pass and I also saw burned forest areas in the Poudre Canyon. I got a couple of pictures of the burned forest.

Lock it up. Denver just broke its all time monthly average temperature- when all is said and done it'll come in right around 79.0 plus or minus a tenth, which shatters the old record by more than a degree. Remind me to get a swamp cooler next time I need a new AC unit... electric bill this month is $$$$

CLIMATE REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BOULDER, CO

........ JULY 2012...HOTTEST JULY ON RECORD............

JULY 2012 WAS THE HOTTEST JULY IN DENVER SINCE WEATHER RECORDS BEGAN

BACK IN 1872. THE MONTH GOT OFF TO A HOT START WITH MUCH ABOVE

NORMAL TEMPERATURES DURING THE FIRST 6 DAYS OF THE MONTH. A RECORD

MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES WAS SET ON THE 2ND. COOLER AND WETTER WEATHER

MOVED INTO THE FRONT RANGE OF COLORADO ON THE 7TH AS THE UPPER RIDGE

OF HIGH PRESSURE MIGRATED FROM THE CENTRAL PLAINS STATES INTO THE

MIDWESTERN STATES...AND A WEAK COLD FRONT MOVED INTO NORTHEASTERN

COLORADO. THIS PATTERN ALSO ALLOWED THE FLOW OF MONSOONAL MOISTURE

TO MOVE INTO COLORADO FROM THE SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST. THIS RESULTED IN

A STRETCH OF BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES FROM THE 7TH THROUGH THE

10TH. UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE THEN REESTABLISHED OVER THE REGION

BRINGING MUCH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES TO DENVER FROM THE 11TH

THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. NO ADDITIONAL RECORDS WERE SET DURING

THIS PERIOD...HOWEVER...THERE WERE 5 DAYS IN WHICH THE MAXIMUM

TEMPERATURE REACHED OR EXCEEDED ONE HUNDRED DEGREES.

TEMPERATURES:

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 78.9 DEGREES WHICH WAS 4.7

DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS MAKES JULY OF 2012 THE HOTTEST JULY SINCE

RECORDS BEGAN IN 1872. THERE WERE 27 DAYS IN WHICH THE MAXIMUM

TEMPERATURE EXCEEDED 90 DEGREES...WHICH ESTABLISHES A NEW RECORD.

THE OLD RECORD WAS 26 DAYS BACK IN 2000 AND 2008. THERE WERE ALSO

SEVEN DAYS IN WHICH THE TEMPERATURE REACHED THE CENTURY MARK. THIS

TIES 2005 FOR THE MOST 100 DEGREE DAYS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY. THE

COOLEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 57 DEGREES WHICH OCCURRED ON

THE MORNING OF THE 26TH. BELOW IS LIST OF TEMPERATURE RECORDS TIED

OR BROKEN DURING THE MONTH.

JULY 2012 MONTHLY TEMPERATURE RECORDS:

JULY 2012 WAS HOTTEST ON RECORD (AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 78.9 DEGREES)

PREVIOUS RECORD WAS JULY 1934 (AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 77.8 DEGREES)

THERE WERE 27 DAYS IN WHICH THE TEMPERATURE REACHED OR EXCEEDED 90

DEGREES. THE OLD RECORD WAS 26 DAYS BACK IN 2000 AND 2008.

THERE WERE 7 DAYS IN WHICH THE TEMPERATURE REACHED OR EXCEEDED 100

DEGREES. THIS TIES 2005 FOR 100 DEGREE DAYS IN JULY.

DATE TEMPERATURE TYPE OF RECORD OLD RECORD YEAR SET

JULY 2ND 101 DEGREES NEW RECORD MAX 100 DEGREES 2007

The upper ridge will be pretty far west over the 4 corners in much of the medium range. That is pretty bad for getting high moisture in our area. Maybe just moderate amounts of showers in western Colorado and Utah. There could be some days with wind shear over 30 knots. That should do approximately nothing for enhancing storms the Front Range urban corridor.

Pretty brutal pattern we're in until at least the end of the week.

Long range offers some hope for the ridge to break down. I'll believe it when I see it!

It's worth noting that at Stapleton, site of the old Denver airport until 1996, the average July temp was 77.5.

Good point. I imagine the low temps at DIA in the winter are a fraction lower than the low temps at Stapleton, so it might balance things out (or just make them seem more extreme, depending on what you;re looking at). Even so, 77.5 would be in the top 5.

Yes, I believe low temps at DIA do run a bit colder than Stapleton during the winter.

77.5 would have been 4th warmest.

It is also worth noting that the average temp at Stapleton in June was 75.8, which was actually .8 warmer than DEN. So clearly June 2012 was easily and legitimately the hottest June in Denver history. July 2012 probably was not.
