icebreaker5221
Looks once again like the Front Range and adjacent Plains are in a giant precip hole for the upcoming event. Any hope for moisture with this pattern? Or do I have to get out the hose in winter again? Grrr. Very Nina-like, where west CO does much better than Front Range. Chinook
The NWS forecast is now 5-10 valleys, 6-12 benches. That's pretty big for here. I disagree with it though. The difference between bench and valley areas is always bigger than that. Additionally they think steady snow lasts through Friday morning whereas I can't see it lasting past maybe 2 AM for many. Especially areas not favored in NW flow like mine. I'd say 3-7 in the valleys, 6-12 benches. What's a bench? A mesa? I typically don't see that word. For you Colorado people: southwest flow aloft is not really kind to this area, unless there is some other major upslope or frontogenesis event to force the precipitation on east Colorado. Now it even looks like the cold surface temperatures come in from both the north and west, not just the north, starting tomorrow. Looks like it could be much windier than I previously thought, with downslope wind gusts to 30 knots during and just after the front. NWS BOU MODELS ARE STILL QUITE DIFFERENT REGARDING THE SURFACE PATTERNFOR THE PLAINS AND WHETHER THERE WILL BE A CHANCE OF SNOW OR NOT.THE NAM WANTS TO KEEP VERY STRONG DOWNSLOPING PATTERN TO CLEAR OUTANY CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION WHEREAS THE GFS AND ECMWF WANT TO SHOWSOME SNOW ABLE TO FORM IN THE DAYTIME HOURS BEFORE EXITING TO THEEAST. WILL KEEP THE SLIGHT CHANCE THAT WAS ALREADY IN THERE. WINDSAHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT...MAINLY SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 70 WILL BEQUITE STRONG WITH WIND GUSTS APPROACHING CRITERIA...SHOULD SEEGUSTS OF 40 TO 50 MPH. FWIW, I found a 4km NAM snow total plot. Go to the left side of this page to see the options for 4km NAM snow plots. http://www.meteo.psu.edu/~fxg1/ewallhires.html
famartin
What's a bench? A mesa? I typically don't see that word. That's a SLC thing. When the lake level rose, it would form a "bench" of fairly similar elevation along the shore. Then it would rise again, or lower, and another "bench" would form. Basically, a relic of past lake levels. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bench_%28geology%
mayjawintastawm
Really funky temps today along the Front Range. 52 at my house, 36 at work all day (12 miles north and 400 feet lower). That mixing (or lack thereof) really made a difference. Brr!
CharlestonNYC
I can report at least 4 to 5 inches of fresh fluff on the eastern bench by the university. coming down at a very nice clip. BlizzardWx
2 inches of snow so far and temps have dipped to 25F here. Slowing down a bit now so hopefully it picks back up later.
BlizzardWx
Doesn't look like it snowed at all during the night until recently but it is snowing again. Nothing showing up on radar so I hope it lasts a while but no way to know. Normally in these kinds of situations it breaks up a bit towards afternoon. Looks like areas favored in NW flow have done great. To my south in Pason or Woodland Hills they have a foot of snow, almost two feet in parts of Salt lake against the mountains. Yet here we have less than 3 inches still.
Chinook
I got about 1/2" of snow yesterday morning. Then it was just a bit of light snowfall, as temperatures were dropping yesterday afternoon, and it was somewhat windy. I saw a break in the clouds around sunset. Then last night it went from 10F at midnight to about -1F near my back yard, with some clear skies. I saw on the Weather Channel that Salt Lake got 15-24" in the city. This storm was interesting with some areas receiving as much as 35 inches of snow while others got only an inch. (Areas of similar elevation and within 50 miles of each other!) Near 3 inches of snow here so pretty pathetic. But SLC airport had 10, and most of the eastern suburbs or bench areas had 1-3ft.

boulderrr
Not sure how cold it got last night in Boulder Canyon as my indoor/outdoor thermometer stopped transmitting at -1F at ~1030PM last night. Woke up this morning, tried to take a shower, and not a drop of water came out. Frozen pipes. Good thing I'm a renter, I guess. My truck had a bit of trouble starting and made a high pitched groaning noise right as it started up. Definitely a cold one! On another note: I'm totally not digging the mid- to long-range forecast. famartin
It was -13 here at my place. -16 is the coldest its been so far this winter so you would think I would be like "yuck!" but seeing other places in the region down to -20, -25, even one report of -30, makes -13 seem bearable. I remember two nights around -20F when I went to college in Middlebury, VT...one in Mar 2007 and one in Jan 2009. Frigid stuff.. I love your area's scenery, and it sounds as if the climate is just as enjoyable. All-time extreme is -43. -20 has been extremely rare in the last 40 years, with only 15 days -20 or lower since 1970; only one day -20 or lower in the last 20 years. Last year was a non-winter; we had 0 snow depth all of December and most of January. Despite that we still managed to get down around 0, though on one of those days we recovered into the 50s. The scenery around here has grown on me; for the first few years all I saw was a barren brown wasteland. Its still a lot browner than I'd prefer, but at least in winter it can be pretty white. I still miss big storms though; 1 foot + storms are extremely rare here; there's only been 4 since 1970.
aslkahuna
Been cold in AZ as well with temperatures in the low to mid 20's in Tucson and in the single digits and teens in Cochise County. Douglas has been as low as +7F while Elfrida has been down to +4F. This means that temperatures in the washes and along the river probably dropped below zero. Perfect example of why border crossers tend more often to die from exposure than heat when crossing the desert and grassland valleys and mountains. BlizzardWx
Peters Sink Utah (near Logan) hit -46 this morning! Several record lows in the area. Here in provo we bottomed out at -3F. Had a high of 13F which is exceptionally cold and Provo airport at lower elevation was only 7F. Its currently 4F which is about 4F colder than last night at this time so hopefully we go below zero again. Looks like we will be sub 20 for at least another week or more. famartin
-17 may be our coldest of the year here... there were thoughts that, like in early January, a very cold air mass might get stuck under the ridge this week, and while its cold, its not as cold and certainly not colder... on Monday night just enough of a warm push moved in with some clouds to mix out the coldest air. BlizzardWx
-17 may be our coldest of the year here... there were thoughts that, like in early January, a very cold air mass might get stuck under the ridge this week, and while its cold, its not as cold and certainly not colder... on Monday night just enough of a warm push moved in with some clouds to mix out the coldest air. Same here today and its up to 25F. Probably stays below freezing for the next week, still the coldest is probably behind us. Looking ahead though it looks like an active storm track sets up out of the NW. Probably some good snow with that.
