famartin
That's nuts. How much snow is on the ground? A bit over 7" at my place, but some areas have over a foot.
tacoman25
DEN has been sub-freezing 8 of the last 9 days. After only seeing 2-3 sub-freezing days the entire season before that.
nzucker
A bit over 7" at my place, but some areas have over a foot. Very cold temperatures look to continue in Elko...NWS has 8/-11 tomorrow and 11/-4 on Friday. That must be near record cold on the highs...maybe 20 degrees below average? Impressive, I really am tired of the muted cold here in the urban East. I need to experience something brutal.
skierinvermont
Looks like the models have shifted west with the troughing D7-14 and upstream ridging in AK. The Euro is especially west and brings storm after storm into the PNW and through the mountains.

I can see it. I love days like these... just a couple a year though... BTW, I hope that hose on the other house isn't still connected to any water! Would be nice to have that here but we need some more snow first. It's starting to get really ugly with the Xmas eve/day 2 inches looking more like styrofoam than snow. The High Plains farmers are getting really nervous again, hopefully 2013 won't be as bad as last year.

Chinook
Alamosa CO has had some cold mornings. The average for the last 3 days has been 24.2F below normal. December was also quite unusual. It was 6.3F below normal. Is their thermometer broken or something? Most of Colorado was near normal for December.

Terpeast
I'm visiting northern Utah Jan 6-10 (for work), and I've been watching the model forecasts for that area to see if there'll be any snowfall. Doesn't look like much, but could change.

I'm pretty confident (70%) that the storm on the 10-11th will at least bring significant snows of 6"+ with a decent chance (40%) at 1-2'+ for the Cottonwood canyons The next chance for snow would be the 14th, but that is a ways away. BlizzardWx
Back in Utah again, been home in Portland for three weeks. We have about 3-4 inches in most places around Provo. Also its been real cold. Highs of about 20 and lows of -2 the last two days. The system on the 10th looks like a possible blizzard with cold air, strong winds, and heavy precip. Long range isn't too bad either with the deep trough. Currently 7F
BlizzardWx
Still cold with no snow melt. Made it up to the low 20s this afternoon. The inversion is still holding strong. A weak system with warm advection moves through tonight. Possibly some light snow but not much. The inversion looks to turn over with the strong system Thursday but immediately rebuild behind it. That system still looks quite interesting. Depending on where the low to our SW spins up we could see a wide range of snow totals. I think 2-4 is a safe bet for now. Still looks to be accompanied by strong NW winds and very cold temps.
Chinook
Still cold with no snow melt. Made it up to the low 20s this afternoon. Warm, with all snow melting on the side streets. My car said it was 52 at noon today. I went on to the American Wx.com home page. I usually don't do this. I usually go to just the forums page. I was surprised by the huge 24-point headlines and the number of blogs that are featured, some with conflicting headlines: Warm Pattern on the Way for East A Change for the Colder Where is winter? The Fall of the AO Blogs Here's the way I see it. Warm Pattern on the Way for East, Cold Pattern on Way for West!!! Winter is located in the Rocky Mountains...huge piles of it. I saw lots of "winter" over Christmas vacation. Looks like this upcoming storm system on Friday and Saturday may be fairly snowy for Utah and Wyoming. Its a good thing we have the system moving in to mix the air out, its pretty awful. The 18z actually shows a lot more snow than I had mentioned I am forecasting. If it were right it would like be somewhere in the 4-8 inch range.

BlizzardWx
Winter storm watch is up here now for 3-7 inches. I could see us getting a little more than that too potentially. I don't think winds will quite be strong enough but we aren't far from warranting a blizzard warning. Heavy snow falling, temps falling into the low 20s, and gusty NW winds. How frequent are blizzard conditions for Provo or Salt Lake? Around here, it is tough to get winds much above 25mph during the snow, unless you are at Cheyenne or east of I-25. If winds are fast, it's downsloping. Check this out regarding wind chills after this system, valid 06z Saturday. It shows a zero wind chill near me, but that's not the worst in the country. mayjawintastawm
Looks once again like the Front Range and adjacent Plains are in a giant precip hole for the upcoming event. Seems like every 4-7 years or so there might be one on average. I am in an area that is prone to strong nw winds when the front passes and the gradient looks to stay pretty tight for about 8-12 hours after frontal passage because of the developing low. Some models are showing up to 25kt winds. (I assume that is sustained but it could be gusts, I don't know) Most are a bit lower. The NWS here upped the totals to 4-10 and they mention gusty nw winds but went with the Winter Storm Warning. Those are some mighty cold wind chills! I am glad I don't live in an area with crazy wind chill values.
BlizzardWx
The NWS forecast is now 5-10 valleys, 6-12 benches. That's pretty big for here. I disagree with it though. The difference between bench and valley areas is always bigger than that. Additionally they think steady snow lasts through Friday morning whereas I can't see it lasting past maybe 2 AM for many. Especially areas not favored in NW flow like mine. I'd say 3-7 in the valleys, 6-12 benches.
