BlizzardWx
Bottomed out at 19 this morning, 23F now with moderate snow falling. I think we see 1-2 inches today.
boulderrr
Got down to 5 this morning in Boulder Canyon, though it happened in the middle of the night. I reckon it would've gotten even colder had the down-sloping winds not picked up overnight.
BlizzardWx
2 inches of powder today. Roads and sidewalks were an absolute mess. Plowing crews gave up because it was making things worse by compacting the snow.
skierinvermont
Totaled 4 or 5" in the valley here the last few days (3" depth) .. mountain has had about 2 feet. The winds and blowing snow were brutal today.. i got some serious wind burn.
boulderrr
We ended up with a surprise ~1" here in Boulder last night. Seeing the roads this morning makes it obvious that it was a surprise. I rode my bike in so didn't have to deal with all the traffic jams I saw through town! I was actually pleasantly surprised with how well my bike handled the snow on the creek path. mayjawintastawm
Yup, we were 5.2 degrees yesterday AM, and 10 this AM with a fresh 0.8" again. Traffic was positively stupid. Biking the 15 miles to work would not have been a totally bad idea except that I have meetings till 6:30 tonight.
Chinook
It was 10-12 degrees on Monday morning here. It's about 58 right now. I busted out the sun tan lotion. At least a fairly moist system will hit the mountains in the next few days, particularly Arizona.

Longing for the day when we can move out west. Winter hasn't been very kind so far. Normal snowfall to date: 10.1". Actual snowfall to date: 4.0". I've lived out here nearly 6 years, since January 2007. Hoping to get back east eventually... honestly, I'm not a fan of the weather here. Long stretches of boring, interrupted by rather small events. We had the first official 1 foot+ storm since I've been here last March, though max snow depth was actually only 6 inches. That's March for you. Other than that, the biggest storms since I've been here have been 7-8" once a winter or so. Most events are in the 1-4" range. Piddly. So, even though our average is 41", its not really ideal if you like good snowstorms. I want to get back some place that gets big storms. Big winter storms are what really got me into this business. What area of the east? I would not want to live in your area either. We are looking at Oregon where summers are great, big mountain snows and abundance of outdoor recreation. I have had my fill of big snows, I'd rather be near huge mountain snow areas without having to deal with shoveling or plowing.

I hear ya, at least you are getting some snow... none down here. I miss the big winter storms, and I'm actually thinking of doing a snow chase to the next front range blizzard where I camp out in a hotel in Denver or Boulder... I just gotta learn the meteorology there first, so I could recognize a good set up when I see one.

Since then, I've witnessed a number of huge snowstorms: Dec 2006 (27"), March 2009 (18"), October 2009 (21"), and February 2012 (22"). Very few well-populated places out east can top the frequency of 12"+ snowstorms we see here. Speaking of snow, there looks to be a good chance of a decent storm now on Wednesday here. Exactly, that's why I'm targeting Front Range for snow chases... it's the closest place to Houston that sees a high frequency of 12+" snows. Only problem is its a 16 hour drive away, or I'd have to fly.
snownut
Anyplace within an 8 hour drive to Jersey would be good, but of course I'd prefer to be north or west of DC. Our primary home is about an hour west of DC and the mountain home is about 2 hours west with peak a boo views of Mount Storm & Dolly Sods where big snows happen every year. So is your moving back active planning or future goal? Picture of last real snow from February 2010 in WV.... that winter was endless shoveling and plowing:

We had two 12"+ storms last winter, one right before Christmas and then the 22" in Feb. Since I've been here, we've averaged a little over one 12"+ storm/winter...3 in 2006-07, 0 in 2007-08, 1 in 2008-09, 1 in 2009-10, 0 in 2010-11, and 2 in 2011-12. And usually 3-4 6"+ events. Chinook
Looks like we will have an upper trough near here on December 19th. The GFS shows some nice upslope at 850mb at 12z December 19th. Surface low at Colorado Springs.
skierinvermont
7-8" in the valley last night and today. 12-14" at the mountain. 30-45" forecast next 3 days at the mountain. First time in my life I have ever seen a forecast like that. 30-45"... ummm... what??? EDIT: Now they say 40-60" including the 7" last night (35-50" not including). tacoman25
Looking more and more likely that we see a significant snowfall Wednesday on the Front Range. Latest GFS would easily be 6"+.

Chinook
The GFS has 0.5" liquid for this Wednesday near Fort Collins. I guess I have a hope for over 3" with this system. Looks like nearly zero wind at 700mb for the time when the 700mb low goes through.

You live in a really dry zone for sure, need serious elevation through out that region for big events. Are there any areas outside of the mountains of NV that get more than 15" of annual rainfall? snownut
Don't think so. I am guessing the annual precipitation map could be a topo map for the mountains? How far are you from big mountains, I'd be road tripping. http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/pcpn/nv.gif

There are good sized mountains 20 miles southeast, but the road into them usually closes in the snow. Its good for early and late season events, but mid-winter is shut down.
