That pic in question looks more like a tail cloud than a funnel cloud tho tail clouds tend to attach to a wall cloud--guess there might be a ragged one. Without vid it's hard to say for sure...

Nice map, Matt... Though I need to teach the map maker that the north arrow doesn't need to be the same size as the legend ;)

1.) That was not my map, it was the individual manning the GIS position in the EOC.

2.) It was made very quickly during a hectic time. The final product, which we hope to release by the end of the week, will have cartographic elements arranged properly.

All good! Looking forward to seeing the final version :)

Hi there - long time lurker but I got some decent shots of Friday's action so I figured it was worth a post,

These are all from the parking lot of the Dorsey MARC station near MD 32 and the B/W Parkway on Friday around 4:45. I was in a great position to watch it's development as it moved northeastward, just west of where I was. Immediately after it passed, they issued a tornado warning from northern Anne Arundel and southern Baltimore. From my relatively modest experience, I'm pretty sure this was just a rather photogenic piece of scud since it wasn't actually rotating. However the clouds above it were rotating slowly at the time. Lots of great updraft action feeding into the bottom of the scud. The entire album is at http://www.flickr.co...s/37258290@N04/. Afterwards I made it down to Bowie and thought I was in a perfect position to intercept the storm that was warned for PG and eastern DC with the confirmed F0 just outside the beltway, but I was a mile and a half too far north. All in all a thrilling day since I made it into 3 separate storms (including the earlier Mt. Airy storm just before 3:00) that had confirmed touchdowns, even though I didn't see any in person. I have over 1 GB of video of the storm as well (with no clue how to share it - maybe I'll youtube it eventually). I apologize if these the images are too large, this is the first time I've ever tried to include images.

Enjoy!

Chris

Looking SW - probably a sustained 25/30 mph inflow blowing from my back into the storm

Looking SW as the storm was arriving - first appearance of something suspicious

Looking NW - pusedo double vortex - enough to freak out the guy in the pickup truck next to me who was also taking pictures

This appears to be a video of the same cloud. Seems to support a tail cloud rather than a funnel:

I work in Rockville and when I left work at 4:45 I thought that if I took 198 to 95 to 32 to Annapolis I might be able to intercept the storm coming from Greenbelt (it looked nasty and ready to produce a tornado). Off I went. When I got to 198 and 95 it started raining hard nothing crazy as I drove up 95 and got on 32 heading east towards NSA that's when I said this may have not been the smartest move! The rain was so bad you could not drive cars stopped and what was cool to the right south it was bright and then you could see the clouds spinning and multiple scud clouds about to form a tornado. The tornado was confirmed on the next exit up 95 and 175 BWI . It was fun as hell what I didn't like was the traffic you could not get out of the way even if you tried something to think about in the future. Lets do it again soon :)

I'll be very curious in what they determine the Ft. Meade damage to be from, because from my view on my porch about that time, sure looked like some circulation in a cloud right over Ft Meade.

MIC at DCA identifies it as a funnel and so do several other mets from NASA Greenbelt.

On second look, maybe it is spinning a bit. I can't tell for sure.

Since you actually got to see it with your eyes, I'm curious to hear if you saw it rotating. Your eyes > shaky camera from a distance.

It's not the best video to make solid judgments from but to me it still looks like a tail cloud. However in this vid you can see it connected to a rotating base with a ragged wall cloud. Tail clouds can rotate (or appear to) at least a little. It could also be that the viewer sees air continue to condense along it while moving, which can also look rather suspicious. Certainly not to diminish it at all if it is that as it sure looks like a fairly solid -- particularly for around here -- tornadic cell in that video, whether or not it is producing or about to at the time. I think generally you'd see the funnel/tornado drop out of the wall cloud to the left or even further left. You can more easily see the rotation in that mass than the "finger" protrusion.

You are correct...intersection of Grove Rd and 355. I actually wasn't chasing. I was taking a friend to pick up his truck. It was raining when I left my house and radar looked mostly benign. As soon as I hit Ballenger Creek Pike, I saw the tornado warning and realized Ballenger Creek was in the heart of it. I looked north and saw that wall cloud. I must have looked like an idiot trying to take a pic while driving. lol. Drawing a line of the storm track, probably came within a mile of my house.

Ok I though that was the area. Was not sure if that was the Yamaha shop or the Harley. But I was pretty sure Grove Rd. Thanks!!

LWX put up some information regarding tracks and other reports this morning on their page...

http://www.erh.noaa....svrwx_20120601/

Interesting, thanks for that link. According to their map, the wall cloud that I watched track across eastern Loudoun did in fact briefly produce a tornado right after it left my field of view. I believe this is the same tornado that MoD posted a video of, and is referenced in the map is being almost on the border of Loudoun and Montgomery.

Cool to know that the storm pictured below did very briefly become tornadic

This picture was taken by an MCPS employee near Damascus High School in northern MoCo and was sent to me via email. This is most likely from the second wave of storms that rolled through around 3:00pm. I was outside of my school less than a mile from DHS and saw what appeared to be a lfiting verticle cloud around theat time. I couldn't get a good view because of the trees.

Someone gave you wrong information, This photo was taken by a person who lives in Sterling, Va.

It was on WUSA Channel 9 as well.

That figures...well my compliments to the photographer from Sterling. Do you know if the picture is from Damascus?

no problem, lol. my bad i worded it wrong, the photo was also taken in sterling, va that afternoon

You know I was skeptical that it was Damascus when I first looked at it, but it looked close enough that I ignored my initial "gut" feeling...live and learn.

  • 3 weeks later...

Was out spotting and manage to grab this picture of the Hampton EF-1 tornado as it headed towards my hometown/house....

7423906016_885cfb1416.jpg7423895048_fbce92497a.jpg

If there is some good news from the tornado, it did raise awareness of storms in the Hampton area. People seem to be on a higher alert now, yet still few know what to do or actually do take shelter...

Nice pics James!

Thanks. That's the one I've seen before. It's tough to tell from a picture, but it looks very scud-like. When you saw it, was it rotating?

Nice vid. Where was that taken?

That is the video the NWS mentions in their storm report. I asked LWX for a link and thats what they sent. It was taken from an office building in Fairfax Co, looking across the river into MC making this the Poolesville tornado.

Sorry for the delay, had a baby Llama birth thats taken most of my time the past two weeks.

H2O, STFU with the CIA crap. You make yourself look like a spaz.
