Northeast Severe/Convective/Thunder thread II

I think I'll be making my way south of Friday

Chasing in DC metro with low topped cells ripping northeast at 60 will be cake :)

Yeah I would do some serious homework over the next couple of days before you venture in that direction. If you can become confident on the warm front lifting into S PA / N MD, perhaps that may be a target. The DC-VA corridor is a cluster f.

No traffic at all.

Virginia's state slogan becomes rather insulting and hilarious when you get stuck in traffic with your significant other. You'll end up choking them by the time you clear that traffic.

I was thinking northern MD area.

Haven't really looked much down that way b/c I've been spending all my time focusing on yesterday, however, I looked a little and the setup is rather eye opening. Deepening sfc low off to the west with a negatively tilted trough along with the potential for moderate instaiblity in the warm sector with a 60-70 kt 500mb jet max to the west and 40-50 knots over the region...not to mention a llvl jet of 35-45 knots possible!

Have to go to work so tonight I'll be able to look more closely.

My Dad emailed from work this morning:

We ended up getting 4.8” of rain. Our foundation got struck by lightning, which left pock marks on the outside of the house, then it came in and grounded itself on the metal conduit for the dryer, and blew out a baseball size piece of concrete from the foundation wall. There are pieces of concrete all over down the basement, some all the way on the other side from the dryer. Our modem burnt up, so we have no internet. Hurricane Rd is closed, with rocks and debris all over the place.

Impressive flood damage in Swanzey, NH based on photos. roads washed out, etc

Areas north of Route 2 in NH had 3-4"+ thru mid-aft yeasterday, according to Doppler, and got pounded again by the last and longest storms, so I imagine they had some fun there, as well. MBY had 2.16" in 5 separate TS, at 12:30, 7:30, 8:30, 10 AM, then 6 PM thru almost midnight. All that convection with temps 56/49, as the marine influence fought to a draw with the heat/humidity.

These newfangled cable modems are modern lightning rods...

(jk Sam... I have lost 2 of them due to lightning). Hope they are ok

lol no kidding. Yeah, everyone is fine at least. Glad I wasn't home for that, because my Dad was probably livid the rest of the night lol

I wonder if the lightning hit nearby and went into the basement. Seems weird to have foundation struck by lightning, but I heard of blowouts like that before. Thank God the house didn't get hit.

I'm guessing you're right. There is a flood drainage pipe that extends from the basement toward the trees, where lightning also struck yesterday, so that could have conducted it to the basement.

I'll tell ya though...it's amazing what the grid companies can do right now..how technology is helping out. Around here, many roads have powerlines underground. Some streets like mine still have above ground wires. However if lightning strikes nearby, a circuit is tripped and the power shuts off. All the company has to do is pop open a manhole and flip the switch. Pretty cool.

I love a good tstm, but I would be telling a lie if I said I didn't get nervous of the place getting ht by lightning.

Wonder if Saturday night we will actually get a Tstorm to the coast

HA good one ;) Only got to 83F in my hood yesterday, capped off with a refreshing, storm-abliterating sea breeze at about 5pm which tanked temps into the lower to middle 70s as that discintegrating line approached CT from the NW.

Got to 93F here at the wx center in DXR though.

amazing how may folks came up to me yesterday saying we were going to get slammed by severe winds and tornados. Paying attention to detail for the loss.

Yeah I heard...."They are saying tstms this aftn, but you know how they are...they always change their forecasts...nobody knows.."

I said you won't get anything BTW and left. They all looked at me.

Some storms firing now across NY state. Those will head east to wrn MA and even CT I think later today.

1. I was working all day yesterday and obviously everyone I work with knows I'm a brewing MET, so they kept reffering to media forecasts that included severe notation, and I just told them to go outside and feel the strong southerly breeze. They came back in, puzzled, and I said there's your forecast, no storms, just maybe a rumble of thunder, and they looked at me like I was an idiot. Sure enough we didn't even get the rumble of thunder. +1 for Ed. Can't wait to see them tomorrow at work lol

2. I'm interning in DXR til 3-4pm today. Most guidance holds any activity off until 21-22z, so with my luck I'll miss it. I think DXR north and west has some chance to see something with some day time heating. CLouds already breaking here.

Ryan didn't even mentioin a storm on air today for CT

I think that's a good call, except for maybe northern Fairfield and western Litchfield county. Most short tetrm guidance has some convection later this afternoon and this evening with temps rising into the lower 80s.

Over towards you, I think you'll be in the clouds all day with maybe a few breaks, struggling into the upper 70s to near 80.
