Northeast Severe/Convective/Thunder thread II

Just had a very close strike and lost power and internet for about 10 minutes. Still raining rather hard with more thunder and lightning overhead. Good long duration t-storms. Looks like that line survived a little farther east than usual but once it got past the CT.river it died.

I wish Will would come back and post. I know thunderstorms aren't his thing, but seriously...

He'll be back. He probably wouldn't have posted that much though..lol. Then there is me posting about storms 200 miles from me. Eh, I like weather and enjoy discussing it..even if I don't witness it.

Still having occasional flashes and thunder two hours after the show passed.

Meanwhile, the trashcan under the eaves is overflowing. No more "if it's yellow let it mellow". I'm going to start flushing toiletes just for the hell of it.

Quite a bit of rain in a short time. The waterfall here is noticeably louder now.

That was a + bolt most likely. Anvil bolts from stratiform rain behind the squall line. That's what took out the telephone pole next to my condo last year. Came out of nowhere.

Still having occasional lightning here too, never was all that impressive up my way.

Our well pump is old, luckily we have a small pond so I wont be letting anything mellow if it does die.

Seems like you never see interesting weather Scooter. You should move to GC, think of all the awesome weather we've seen in just the last year. A nice soaking rain here now. Drought? No stinkin' drought.

That's why I'm always wary off heading back out on the golf course or lake after a squall comes through. It wa the closest strike and loudest blast of the night. I was washing dishes looking out the kitchen window and got to see a really electric blue flash with instantaneous thunder. Pretty cool.

There has been nothing noteworthy at all since October. I can't ever recall that.

However, May is not the time for storms here.

Yeah the one I saw was bright white. Best part was watching the wires start sparking right after..lol. Of course I then worried about the condo. Last year 3 places got hit by lightning within a mile from me.

Well that marine taint (feel like DT in winter) is doing what it does so well. CRAP!

The coastal plain i.e. EMASS needs a more NW to SE orientation. This W to E forcing rarely cuts-it.

Did Paul survive?

Man, I hope he makes it in the meteorolgical field someday!

That must be what took out one of my trees last summer--and what's been occuring here for the last two hours.

Most squall lines with weak shear and out flow dominated have that. That rain behind the squall line is the result of air that is still upgliding towards the tropopause. In that area, the rain you have is in the form of ice crystals that still can cause a charge build up.

It's always interested me how some localized areas, with nothing discernably different from surrounding locales, seem to be a magnet for lightning. I know there is a myriad of reasons this can happen. We have a spot up on the hill where the old spring for this homestead was that sems to draw the lightning in. Lots of trees with the tell tale spiral scars, most die but some manage to make it.

Well hills will always have that magnet appeal. I've seen those scars on trees too.

Cool. I think I remember you or Will talking about that last summer. You're so full of great met info, just can't believe you are a Dave Matthews Band groupie, doesn't seem to fit.
