Report Says NWS Misappropriated $43 million

Recommended Posts

I doubt this will ruin the credibility of the National Weather Service. Most folks have come to accept that higher gov't officials in any agency are not always qualified, accountable, nor believable. Jack's predecessor, General Johnson, got fired for the same thing (misappropriation of funds for CONOPS). It's not a shock really, and it's good to know why Jack suddenly "retired". Intriguing timing of this article tho...issued AFTER JH's retirement speech. Now we know why Jack was so quiet on the IT issue. He had his own personal raging battle to fight. lolz.

Thanks Jack (from all the ITs and their families that will be displaced or out of a job in a few months).

Looks like this could also hurt the additional Dual-Pol upgrades taking place next year.

She also said that after the report was released, NOAA asked for $26 million for the Local Warnings and Forecasts base budget and for $9 million to upgrade a network of radar stations. She said she would urge senators to not consider the 2013 funding bill “until Congress can review (NOAA’s) reprogramming request.”

In a word, "ugh"...

Yep, and our office is one of the ones slated for the upgrade in FY 2013. NOAA sure knows how to pick NWS directors I tell ya.

It certainly is NOT going to help it.

True...but it wont be a continuous front page like the Fox scandalous report of the DOA official a couple years ago. The general public will continue to get forecasts/warnings etc from the NWS and not think about this in a couple weeks if, in fact, they do now.

Nothing funny (lolz) about this at all. Hayes is a good guy that meant well, not some skeevey politico. At that level, you have to place a certain amount of trust in your deputies to faithfully perform the mechanics of a large organization. His budget director and FinOps teams let him down. He merely took the fall. Dunno about his CIO and the IT issue.

If anybody thinks it was just Hayes and the NWS at fault, you need to be looking a little higher up.

Or, more rightly, across the board. Government FinOps is cumbersome and fraught with peril. Unless you are a finance wiz, it's easier to get it wrong than right. That's why government executives need to rely heavily on their deputies for specialized disciplines like this.

If you don't know what your board is up to, then you may have some issues (big issues) coming right back at you.

It sounds like the money was shifted to save people from being furloughed or Riffed. Almost every time there has been a serious attempt to cut back the NWS, the NWS chief and others have had to fall on their swords going back to when Friday was at the helm.

The money was shifted to give bonuses to contractors....not to prevent a riff and certaintly not to save the ITOs.

I stand corrected. The initial story I read did not make that clear. It's sad as it just provides fodder for the politicos and others to bash the NWS and NWS forecasters as MaChump already has done.

No NWS mets, that I am aware of, profited from this. And Jaguars suck, I would be more suspicious if they were driving Porsches.

By working hard at two jobs, getting promoted and saving. Sure that works.

ok, thanks for setting me straight, because otherwise i'd have gone on believing that you pilfered $43 million from uncle sam, or at least a certain percentage of that amount, and used the ill-gotten funds to purchase a jag, and then posted about the jag a lot, not realizing that by doing so, you were leaving a trail right back to the scene of the crime
