It's funny that you say that because I have known Ryan since he was like 14 on the boards and chat. Pretty impressive how he has become a big time tv met. :)

It's been a long time! Jerry, Scott (messenger) and some others have been at this for a while lol.

Beautiful picture. :) 4.5 months maybe? till some flakeage.

I think we're due for a September snowfall ;)

And Rick, you're forgetting that as long as Pete is alive and on two legs, there will never be a "bad winter." You two are comparing apples and oranges. He could get 24" of snow and he'd probably say it was ok. He's looking at it in terms of enjoyment while you are looking at it through a meteorological/climatological lens.

Pete will never say winter was bad, just won't happen because he's not separating his emotional enjoyment from climatology ;) I know what he means though... I had a great winter last year in terms of how much fun I had. I wouldn't trade those days for anything... Being in my mid 20s and someday I'll look back on that winter and smile because all life revolved around was waking up early, go to the mountain, measure new snowfall at one of the snowiest locations in New England, and then go skiing and take pictures. How much more enjoyable can it get?

But the climate side of me does see that it was in fact the worst winter since 1979-1980 at the ski resort. That's atrocious. Apples and oranges... overall enjoyment vs. objective climate summary.

Then I don't get the special thing about Dec 2007, other than it overachieved. Maybe that's what made it special on your mind. Otherwise, this forum is rocking no matter what when there is a 10" storm.

I understand what Ray was saying... but I also enjoy a lot of the new (relatively, ie past 5 years) posters and pro contributors like Coastalwx, CapeCod, Mitch, etc. The old times there was a lot less random banter and bickering. There was no "spin" and less arguments. People didn't come on here with the agenda that they need to convince all posters all the time that its been the best spring ever, or the best winter ever, or although stats say its warm its still cold somehow, or that Stowe's picnic tables have the most snow on them, etc.

Like Ray said, things change and we all change... some things for the better, some for the worse, haha. But as long as we get snowstorms, this board will be rocking.

Its funny to think back though and wonder how much time a lot of us have spent on here. I first started reading some forum that was like a weather listserve (like ne.weather.group or something) back in the 90s in middle school (early Joe B forecasts), then went to Wright-Weather BB, then Eastern, and now here. I still remember Messenger's posts from 2005 on WWBB when Cape Cod was getting absolutely blitzed.

Lots and lots of time of my life has been wasted on these boards, haha... and its definitely fun to see the core group that's stuck around too and added some awesome members along the way.

He would never need to.....attending hose conferences opened my world up and I've met some of my best friends by doing so, though apparently not quite as many as I had thought and that is most unfortunate.

Kev, Will and I were always in agreement that the car rides to and from the event were funnest part of the entire experience, so I'm sorry that my decision not to attend based on the loss of that dynamic, along with my life's present state of flux, has apparently drawn the ire of so many. I really just didn't think this was a big deal.

This is not a "whoa is me, sob story, sympathy search" post....but there has apparently been a great deal of curiosity regarding why I, along with some others, have chosen not to attend and I'm just trying to offer up an explanation.

There is no issue with anyone or any particular subforum or contigent of posters.......nor does it have anything to do at all with the manner in which the board is run by Admin./mods.

I think I'm going to put out a missing persons bulletin for my Kocin books. lol

Fwiw, I would have liked to have met Paul Kocin.

Well the weenie banter has gotten annoying at times, but I also think it's tied to the uneventful weather we have had. Every post now has to be how we are above normal and how we will be above normal next week..simply because of persistence. Those people just put forth forecasts without even looking at a model. It was funny 2 years ago..but it gets old.

The bottom line is that when the weather gets entertaining...myself, Will, Ryan, Phil..Mitch et al will be back to posting more fun stuff. Dec 2007 was fun on eastern. I was lurking at the time and it seemed like fun...but it also helped that each storm had busts in a good direction. It's not fun when we get on here and have to post things like "Wow the euro sucked last night.."

Well, if I only got 24" for the whole Winter I'd be pretty bummed. I can't imagine going through a Winter with that little snow. The hard numbers and climatology data are of great interest to me but, as you say, I don't really separate my emotional enjoyment from my definition of a "good/bad" Winter. I'd definitely say it was a bad Winter if I had to look at brown grass all Winter. But that will never happen. First,it doesn't happen here very often and second if it does happen I'm out of here and in AK. I go to snow if snow doesn't come to me.

That's a very good point. January 2011 had that really fun feeling too, but that's probably due to the record amounts of snow and everything breaking right for New England (primarily and especially in the member dense SNE region). You're right, it will get back to being a good ride if we get some quality weather events, especially for the core region of I-95 or I-90/84 where the bulk of the posters live...it won't help moral much if Pete and East Slope up through NNE has a record winter, and the coast suffers. I want a good winter but I'd never wish a poor winter on the coast. For the sake of everyone, hopefully we can have some good widespread snow events.

It's pretty rare that Pete will have a great winter, and winter sucks for the MA coast. Pete and you for that matter will always have more snow...that's a given. I always am humble and take what I can get for snow. I'm with you...I hope we all get good events region wide.

It's not about Dec 2007....it's about the era in which the month occured.

The board was smaller, untainted by subforums and the overall dynamic was more close nit and easy going....there were few enough posters that we could have one active super thread at a time.

I don't expect you to get it because you weren't an active member then.

I understand that aspect of it.

I still think it's a pretty fun place when we get a good event. How awesome was this forum in '10-'11?

Don't get me wrong.....it's still fun when the weather is cranking, but it's just different......the sports threads were the same way. One small, core group of contributors....now it's just chaos and a million threads about everything....I don't even bother with it anymore.

I would have gone either way.

.

Maybe but I distinctly remember you posting that snow was paltry and you're going to AK to find it. Troll all you want but your friends know the real story. And for the record I don't blame you. Go get the snow if you can!

I'm flying down and my plane leaves BDL at 6:50 AM...it's about a 50 minute flight.

Since I'm arriving really early I may just walk around the area until the bar opens up.

oh, sweet...glad you got a flight!

hopefully it is not 110 degrees this time!

Yeah Dave helped me out with looking and such as did Randy.

I was going to bus down for $84 round trip but those 8 hour rides are brutal and they really kill my back.

I've never flown before so this will be pretty cool. I figure though if my brother was able to do it (he used to fly out to Seattle once a year to visit his ex-girlfriend) I can do it.

I'm driving down tomorrow. I probably won't arrive until 10-11 PM depending on when exactly I get out of here and traffic along the way.

I will be avoiding I-95 completely to shunpike tolls (it would be over $60 round trip - ouch!) and hopefully miss traffic related delays on there as well. Due to excessive tolls on the GW Bridge, NJ Turnpike, and Garden State Parkway, NJ will lose my business. Oh well! :P

My route consists of the Taconic Parkway, I-84, I-81, and I-83. It's about 65-70 miles longer than taking I-95 via the GW Bridge and about 40 miles longer than taking NY Thruway, Garden State Parkway, I-95, but hopefully it'll be better driving and free of tolls. Hopefully, it'll be as good as others have said. Look forward to it.

My planned route:
