Memorial Weekend Heat Wave

Hoosier

Recommended Posts

Potentially record breaking heat wave looks to be in store. Records for IND for Sat/Sun/Mon are 94/94/96, all set in 1911. I think Saturday comes up a bit short and Monday looks easily safe, so that leaves Sunday as the best chance of breaking a daily record. In addition, 96 is the highest May temp on record which could be approached on Sunday. If the temperature exceeds 94, it will be the hottest Indy 500 on record.

If you have records post them here.

Although Detroit is overachieving big time already today (went from 80*F-81*F yesterday to 83*F-84*F this morning to 85*-86*F around noon), RAP insists that we get into the low 90s.

Detroit also had its first 70*F+ low today, getting to 71*F around 3 AM before rising back to 76*F around sunrise.

It's a nice way to segway into the weekend of course.

If we can get to 89*F, Detroit will have an 80*F average for the day.

edit: There was an intra-hour 89*F.

ORD records for the 26-28th are 94/94/93. The all time record high for May is 98 (31st - 1934).

Sundays record has the the best chance of being broken, with both the NAM and ECMWF showing 95+ The all time record high for May is also in jeopardy.

Sat and Mon have a chance, but it will depend on several factors. At this time I'll say Sat misses the record and Mon ties.

The YIP station needs to be checked out.

Though Monroe is at 90 also. Still YIP on too many occasions is questionably too high.

Yeah it always seems higher then the surrounding stations...but usually only by a few degrees. Its just been really noticeable as of late because we've had a bunch 88/89 days where YIP got into the 90s

Will be interesting to see how warm we can get on Monday, we hit 90 with 850mb temps of 16-17C today. 850mb temps will be sitting right around 20C Sunday into Monday so if we stay cloud free the all time May record may be in jeoparty at CLE. It would be something to tie or break two all time monthly highs at CLE in three months (March and May).

Through yesterday the May temps at CLE have averaged 62.5. When averaging in today's likely spread and the forecast from CLE for KCLE the average for May falls slightly due to the cool days the second half of next week so May should stay out of the top 10 warmest at KCLE.

Piece from MKX on the heat for Sunday and Monday weather.

SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT...FORECAST CONFIDENCE MEDIUM

THE SFC WARM FRONT WILL SLOWLY PROGRESS NWD THROUGH SRN WI SAT NT

AND EARLY SUN AM. THERE MAY BE ENOUGH LINGERING 850-700 MB WARM

ADVECTION OCCURRING FOR SCT TSTORMS TO CONTINUE INTO SAT EVENING

BEFORE IT LIFTS PRIMARILY INTO NRN WI. FOR SUNDAY A HOT WARM

SECTOR WILL PREVAIL WITH ANY LAKE BREEZE REMAINING AT THE LAKE

FRONT. GUSTY WINDS/DRY AIR ALOFT AND RESULTANT MIXING SHOULD KEEP

THE DEWPOINTS IN THE UPPER 50S-LOWER 60S WHICH IS MUCH LOWER THAN

THE HIGH BIAS OF THE MODELS. THE GUSTY WINDS AND LOW HUMIDITY

SHOULD KEEP OPPRESSIVE CONDITIONS FROM DEVELOPING. SLY WINDS AND

WARM TEMPS WILL CONTINUE SUN NT AND INCREASED LOW TEMPS A FEW

DEGREES ABOVE MOS GUIDANCE FOR MOST LOCATIONS.

FOR MONDAY THE LARGE UPPER LOW AND SFC LOW OVER THE NRN PLAINS

WILL LIFT ENEWD INTO FAR SRN CANADA. THE LARGE UPPER LOW HOWEVER

WILL STILL RESULT IN 500 MB HEIGHT FALLS OF 120 M FROM 12Z MON TO

12Z TUE WITH COLD FROPA MON AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING. CAPE

VALUES COULD SUFFER IF THE WINDY NAM VERIFIES BUT BELIEVE ENOUGH

POOLING OF DEWPOINTS WILL OCCUR ALONG THE FRONT THAT LIKELY POPS

ARE WARRANTED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EXPECTED FRONTAL LIFT AND

AFOREMENTIONED HT. FALLS. A LOWER END SVR POTENTIAL EXISTS DUE TO

MDT UNIDIRECTIONAL SHEAR OVER THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY.

Talk about a temperature bust, the point this morning was 85. It had been as high as 88 and as low as 84 leading up to today. I certainly didn't expect to be posting this.

...RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE SET AT FORT WAYNE...

A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 93 DEGREES WAS SET AT FORT WAYNE TODAY.

THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 92 SET IN 1908.

EDIT: It also looks like the record high minimum is going to be broken at FWA. The old record is 69° and today's low has been 73°.

South Bend looks to tie at 70°

DVN more conservative around here. 86 tomorrow and 94 Sunday. If we end up getting a lot of rain tonight I would tend to agree with that. Wet soils could shave off a few degrees.

Doesn't look like the heavy rain will materialize tonight in this area, so we should be able to overachieve Sunday assuming everything else goes as planned. Probably end up more like 96-97 compared to the 94 point.

I wouldn't call off the storms tonight. Storms moving east out of Cedar Rapids. Looks like another heavy rain threat along US 20 tonight.
