Storm Clouds
Hey guys, I am looking into buying a nice weather radio to take with me to college for my dorm room. Which type do you think is the best or which type do you have? I was looking at the Midland brand ones (http://www.midlandradio.com/Desktops-Weather.OCS), are they good? Also, I am playing with the idea of buying a lightning detector. I like the Thunderbolt made by Ambient Weather (http://www.ambientweather.com/sptbcr1bl.html). Does anyone have this and is it useful? JoMo
If going Midland, I'd go with the WR-300 that will allow you to program in what alerts you want. It can be bought at Amazon for $45. http://www.amazon.com/Midland-WR-300-MIDLAND-WR300-Weather/dp/B00009V2YV/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337361130&sr=8-1 Best lightning detector available is your ears... If it thunders, there's lightning around.
Storm Clouds
I think I am going to go with the Midland WR 120. I don't need the extra AM/FM radio feature on the WR 300. As for the Thunderbolt, I am still not sure...it seems overpriced! Does anyone on here actually use a lightning detector or just their ears? Be aware that the WR-120 will go off for flash flood watches and warnings and you can't program them out. It can be extremely annoying as a lot of Joplin residents found out after they got their free ones and we had a night of severe weather. Many just turned theirs off. L.B. LaForce
I have had a Reecom R-1630 weather radio for a few years, and I like it. Never had problems with it, gets great signal and completely customizable. It may be a little pricier than other models ($69.99), but definitely worth it. http://www.reecominc.com/ As far as lightning detectors-that one seems ridiculously expensive. I have a Strike Alert one that I used to use when I umpired baseball games. It about the size of a pager, and tells you howo far away the lightning is in increments. If that's all your after (the distance of the strike), then just go with that one, the Thunderbolt does seem way overpriced. http://www.ambientweather.com/stpelide.html
Storm Clouds
I decided with the WR-300 from Midland. I do think it would be a good idea to program which warnings you want the alarm to go off to. I don't want to be woken up for just a flash flood warning! As for lightning detectors, I decided to can the whole idea of buying one (for now at least). The Thunderbolt is WAY too expensive! BeauDodson
I have tried them all - literally. Midland 300! You can program out all the products you do not want to tone alert for - among other features.
Aaron John
You can go for Midland WR120 Weather Radio. It has SAME technology. The SAME feature can be very handy as it gives alerts based on zones(County). Simultaneously, it elucidates all the factors approximately related to wind and temperature that relatively affects the weather of any place. The device monitor comprehensively covers 7 channels aired on the NOAA. I have been using this device for last 2 years. Still, it works perfectly. I got a great help to buy this device from https://thehumannest.com/best-weather-radio-reviews/, this site. If you want you can check the site.
